Günter Brus (1938–2024) was an Austrian painter, performance artist, graphic artist, experimental filmmaker, and writer who stands as one of the most provocative and influential figures in post-war European art history. Born on September 27, 1938, in Ardning, Gau Steiermark, Ostmark, German Reich, he spent his formative years in Mureck before enrolling at the Kunstgewerbeschule Graz and subsequently relocating to Vienna in 1956, where he studied painting and formed a lifelong friendship with fellow artist Alfons Schilling. Deeply influenced by German Expressionism, the works of Edvard Munch and Vincent van Gogh, and the gestural intensity of Abstract Expressionism, Brus developed a visceral artistic vocabulary characterized by explosive creative excess and the radical use of his own body as a medium. Following his conscription into military service in May 1961 and a subsequent psychological crisis that halted his work until late 1962, he returned with renewed intensity, performing his first "Aktion" titled Ana in 1964, in which he painted his wife and his own body with white and black paint. That pivotal year also saw him co-found Viennese Actionism (Wiener Aktionismus) alongside Otto Muehl, Hermann Nitsch, and Rudolf Schwarzkogler, establishing a movement that would redefine performance art through deliberately shocking, anti-bourgeois spectacles intended to expose the lingering fascist tendencies within Austrian society.

Brus's most notorious work, the 1968 performance Kunst und Revolution (Art and Revolution) at the University of Vienna, exemplified his confrontational methodology and commitment to breaking social taboos: he urinated into a glass, covered his body in his own excrement, masturbated while singing the Austrian National Anthem, and proceeded to drink his urine and induce vomiting, resulting in his arrest and a six-month prison sentence that forced him to flee to Berlin with his family until 1976. Beyond these scandalous actions, Brus maintained a prolific multidisciplinary practice, serving as editor of Die Schastrommel, participating in the NO!Art movement and the 1966 Destruction in Art Symposium in London alongside Yoko Ono and Gustav Metzger, and exhibiting at Documenta 5, 6, and 7. From 1970 onward, he expanded his creative output to include the novel Irrwisch and numerous "picture poems" that merged literary and visual arts. His contributions were formally recognized with the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1996, and his legacy is permanently enshrined at the Bruseum in Graz, opened in 2011. Married to Anni Brus (Ana), who played an essential collaborative role in his performances, he continued to work as a columnist for Datum magazine and maintained residences in Graz and the Canary Islands until his death on February 10, 2024, at age 85.
