Alexander Roberts was a prominent 19th‑century Scottish biblical scholar whose career spanned more than four decades of ministry, academic instruction, and scholarly publication. Born on 12 May 1826 in the modest parish of Marykirk, Kincardineshire, he was the son of Alexander Roberts, a flax‑spinner, and Helen Stuart, and received his early education at the local grammar school before entering King’s College, Aberdeen, where he graduated MA in 1847 as the Simpson Greek prizeman. After completing theological training at New College, Edinburgh (1849‑1851), he was ordained in the Free Church of Scotland and served as minister in Stonehaven from 1852 until 1857, demonstrating a keen ability to blend pastoral care with rigorous scriptural analysis. In 1857 he relocated to London to lead the Free Scots Church in Carlton Hill, a move that broadened his influence within the growing network of English‑language Presbyterian congregations. Roberts’s scholarly reputation was cemented when the University of Edinburgh conferred an honorary Doctor of Divinity on him in 1864, and he soon joined the New Testament revision company (1870‑1884), contributing to one of the most ambitious textual projects of the era. His appointment in 1871 as Professor of Humanity at the University of St. Andrews, succeeding John Campbell Shairp, allowed him to shape generations of students while continuing his prolific writing. Among his most influential works are Discussions on the Gospels (1862), where he argued for Greek as the habitual speech of Jesus, and the monumental Ante‑Nicene Christian Library (24 volumes, 1867‑1872), edited with Sir James Donaldson to bring early Church Fathers to an English audience. He also produced a translation of the works of Sulpitius Severus (1895) and authored the Companion to the Revised Version of the New Testament (1881), texts that remain reference points for biblical scholars today. Retiring as emeritus professor in 1899, he died at Mitcham Park, Surrey, on 8 March 1901 and was interred in the historic churchyard of St. Andrews Cathedral, leaving a lasting legacy of erudition, devotion, and scholarly courage.
