Abderrahmane Sittako was born on 13 October 1961 in the town of Kiffa in Mauritania, the son of a Malian father from Sokolo and a Mauritanian mother. He spent his formative years shuttling between Mali and Mauritania, returning to the latter at age eighteen to live with his mother before securing a scholarship that took him to Moscow in 1983. At the prestigious Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography he honed his craft, graduating in 1988 with a short film titled The Game that announced his keen eye for visual storytelling and a preoccupation with cultural displacement. After twelve years in the Soviet capital, he relocated to Paris in 1994, where he would join a vibrant diaspora of African filmmakers and begin a prolific period of directing, screenwriting, and producing that has spanned more than three decades. His early work, including the critically acclaimed Waiting for Happiness (2002), earned a place in Cannes' Un Certain Regard and secured a FIPRESCI Prize, cementing his reputation as a visionary auteur whose narratives intertwine personal memory with broader socio‑political currents. Throughout his career Sissako has consistently explored themes of globalization, exile, and the fragile nature of human communities, often drawing on his own trans‑national experiences to illuminate the universal longing for belonging.

In 2006, Sissako’s film Bamako brought the African continent into global conversations about debt and economic injustice, while his 2014 masterpiece Timbuktu competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, highlighting the stark realities of religious extremism and cultural erosion. Beyond the screen, he served as a cultural advisor to former Mauritanian head of state Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and, in December 2023, joined more than fifty filmmakers in signing an open letter demanding a ceasefire in Gaza, demonstrating his commitment to humanitarian activism. He is married to Ethiopian director Maji‑da Abdi, and his mother’s death on the final day of shooting Waiting for Happiness led him to dedicate the film to her memory, a poignant reminder of the personal losses that often underlie his powerful cinematic oeuvre.
