Aaron Blabey (born 1 January 1974) is an Australian children’s author and former actor who has become one of the most prolific creators of modern picture books and graphic‑novel series for junior readers. Born in Bendigo, Victoria, he began his public career in 1989 as a television and film actor, earning an Australian Film Institute award for his lead role in the 1994 dramedy The Damnation of Harvey McHugh and later appearing in the acclaimed series CrashBurn before retiring from performance in 2005. After leaving acting, Blabey redirected his creative energy toward visual arts, mounting six solo exhibitions between 2004 and 2006, and then turned to publishing with the release of his first picture book Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley in 2007, a title that won a Children’s Book Council of Australia award and received international recognition. His subsequent works such as Sunday Chutney, Stanley Paste and the award‑winning The Ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon cemented his reputation as a versatile storyteller and illustrator, earning multiple CBCA nominations, a White‑Raven honour and several design awards. The launch of the Pig the Pug series in 2014 marked a commercial breakthrough, spawning a globally translated collection that has sold millions of copies and established a recognizable brand of humor‑driven animal protagonists. This success was followed by the wildly popular The Bad Guys graphic‑novel series, which spent over 120 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and led to a DreamWorks animated feature released in April 2022, for which Blabey served as executive producer alongside Patrick Hughes and Etan Cohen. A sequel arrived in 2025, further expanding the franchise’s reach. In parallel, Thelma the Unicorn earned bestseller status and is slated for a Netflix musical adaptation, with Blabey again credited as executive producer. Beyond his books and films, he supports The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, is married to actress Kirstie Hutton, and is father to two sons.
