Hong Kong student Ben Li, [Andy Lau], travels to Japan for his studies and quickly forms a friendship with his mainland Chinese classmate Chang Chih, [Tou Tsung-Hua], as they navigate campus life abroad. Ben is notably unmotivated by academics and largely driven by money, while Chang Chih, in moments when he meets other Chinese people, keeps asking about the whereabouts of his childhood sweetheart, a detail that hints at a deeper, unspoken past he’s chasing.

Back home in Hong Kong, Ben and another friend from the same city, Ming, [Peng Sun], try to elevate their social standing through connections. Ming’s ambitions pull him into the orbit of Yuriko, a bar hostess and owner, in the hopes of positioning himself closer to power by aiming to become the brother-in-law of Ishikawa (the formidable boss often tied to Yamada Ishikawa), a figure associated with Yakuza circles. The path Ming chooses places him at the edge of danger and ambition, weaving the threads of loyalty, status, and risk.

Within Yuriko’s bar, Ben meets Meng Tieh-Lan, [Cherie Chung Cho-Hung], a Chinese student who is there to earn some extra money. Ben’s instant attraction is clear from the start, but Tit-lan’s feelings are not reciprocated, and Meng Tieh-Lan remains guarded about the attention she receives. Tit-lan’s own life is shadowed by hardship; she and her friend Mei Mei, [Tsang Wai-Fai], live with their guarantor and endure humiliation, painting a bleak backdrop to the glossier surface of the nightlife district.

Meng Tieh-Lan’s heart is drawn toward Hideyuki Asano, [Junichi Ishida], Yamada’s top assassin. Asano has journeyed to South America to kill a foe of Yamada’s, a mission that ultimately pulls him back toward Tit-lan. The pull between duty and desire intensifies when Yamada sends his men to have Asano silenced, a brutal reminder of the peril that shadows every connection in this underworld-centered web.

As the tension escalates, Tit-lan faces a dangerous crossroads. Before his death, Asano asks Tit-lan to expose Yamada Ishikawa to the police, hoping to bring down the man who pulls the strings behind much of the violence. Tit-lan, however, becomes a target of the underworld’s pursuit, forcing her to weigh the peril of speaking out against the risk to her own life.

Caught between loyalty and survival, Tit-lan’s passport is detained by her guarantor, leaving her trapped in Japan. Desperate to escape oppression, Ben steps in to help Tit-lan slip out of the country on a boat. The plan, however, is under constant threat as thugs close in, and the couple finds themselves racing to leave a hostile environment behind. Amid whispers of betrayal, danger, and the fragile possibility of a new life, Ben and Tit-lan push forward, determined to find safety and some sense of freedom together, even as the shadows of their past and the forces arrayed against them loom large.
