Zatoichi: The Last 2010

Ichi, Shingo Katori, is a renowned wandering swordsman who returns to his hometown after the tragedy of his young wife, Tane, Satomi Ishihara, being accidentally killed by Toraji, the cowardly art-loving son of a yakuza boss. Hoping to live a quiet life by farming with his friend Ryuji, Takashi Sorimachi, he soon discovers that the same yakuza intend to turn the village into a harbor and squeeze money from the peasants. When Ryuji’s land deeds are seized and held for ransom, Ichi uses his gambling skills to win back the deeds, a victory that inadvertently reveals his true identity and sparks the wrath of the town’s would‑be protectors, who burn down his house in a furious display of power.

To shield themselves from the fallout, the villagers draft a Tanran scroll to present to passing officials, hoping for relief. They also hatch a ruthless plan to get rid of Ichi: they give him a blank scroll to “deliver” to the officials, steering him straight into the clutches of the yakuza. The ruse fractures when Ichi reaches the officials and shows them the blank document; the officials feel insulted and withdraw, leaving the village to confront the mounting danger alone. Realizing the village’s betrayal, Ichi takes responsibility for removing the threat and makes a daring move against the yakuza by marching on their headquarters and killing the boss, a act that leaves the community stunned and divided.

In the final act, the fight catches up with Ichi as Toraji shoots him and a yakuza minion drives a blade into him. Wounded and exhausted, he crawls to the beach where the end comes into view; the open sea and the sand bear silent witness to his collapse. The movie closes on a somber note, implying that Ichi dies and is reunited with his wife in the next life, leaving a trace of sorrow and redemption in the wake of his troubled, merciful journey.
