Mae Davis [Joanne McGee] is a conservative widow who, together with her spinster sister Rose [Carol Goans], is determined to find the perfect girl for Mae’s son Brian [Stewart Carrico]. Their plans are upended when they discover that Brian is gay and has been in a five-year relationship with Dennis, whom they believed was only his roommate.

To come to terms with this truth, Mae and Rose venture into online gay dating and step into a gay bar, where they befri end a colorful cast—drag queens, leathermen, and an art student named Chase [Steve Snyder], who works there as a stripper.

They arrange a dinner to introduce Brian to Chase. However, Brian arrives with Jennie Sue [Ginger Pullman], the daughter of a Christian preacher, and announces that he is no longer gay and intends to marry her. Mae, sensing that Brian might be trying to shield himself from love to avoid getting hurt again, resolves not to let him trap himself in a loveless marriage.

Mae hosts another dinner, inviting friends from the gay bar and members of a local gay youth group, along with Jennie Sue’s parents. The evening quickly spirals into chaos, and Brian finally admits that he cannot marry Jennie Sue because he is still gay, while Jennie Sue’s parents reveal that she is a closeted lesbian and disown her.

With Jennie Sue temporarily living with Mae and Rose, the film closes with a hopeful celebration of everyone’s newly found freedom, leaving open the possibility that Brian and Chase might still find a future together.
