As Sally Malasmas, a cheerful government employee, reluctantly processes her visa application to reunite with her family in the United States, as her parents hope. While her family worries about loneliness in the Philippines, she enjoys a close-knit circle of loyal friends and supportive co-workers. However, during her visa interview, her application is unexpectedly denied by the handsome but dismissive Filipino American consul, Will Derby.
The day after the rejection, Will wakes up from a one-night stand and, due to Manila’s notorious traffic, misses work. He ends up at the Census Bureau where Sally works, and a calculated act of revenge unfolds: Sally burying his inquiry form in a mountain of paperwork, forcing him to wait all day. When Will finally confronts her, she brushes him off, claiming his form is incomplete and must be processed the next day. Frustrated, Will complains to Sally’s supervisor, who sides with him, leaving Sally to stay late and help him track down the information he needs.
Will’s cold, somber mood traces back to his painful search for his birth parents and any remaining family in the Philippines, as well as the mystery of why he was placed for adoption. Moved by his struggle, Sally decides to help him uncover the answers he seeks. Through this shared mission, the two begin to form a connection that grows into something deeper.
Despite the budding closeness, they wrestle with different takes on the nature of their relationship. Will’s casual, easygoing approach to romance clashes with Sally’s traditional, old-fashioned values. To nurture their growing bond, they must navigate and bridge cultural differences and ethnocentric beliefs. If these tensions go unresolved, their relationship could stall before it truly has a chance to develop.
