Lance Clayton is a single father and high school English teacher who dreams of becoming a famous writer, even as his past novels have been rejected by publishers. His 15-year-old son, Kyle, is a provocative, misanthropic student in Lance’s unpopular poetry class, someone whose dismal grades and troubling behavior catch the attention of the school’s principal.

After Kyle’s troubling patterns come to a head, the principal suggests transferring him to a special-needs school. One night, tragedy strikes: Kyle dies in a bedroom accident tied to autoerotic asphyxiation. To salvage his son’s dignity, Lance fabricates a suicide, hanging Kyle in a closet and posting a fake suicide note on his body so the world believes Kyle took his own life.

A classmate eventually surfaces the real suicide note from police records and publishes it in the school newspaper. The note resonates with the students and staff, who suddenly claim to have been friends with Kyle, moved by how deeply intelligent his writings reveal him to be. Seizing the moment, Lance writes and releases a fake journal that he claims was penned by Kyle before his death, fueling a growing posthumous cult of Kyle at the school.

As Kyle’s supposed literary persona gains traction, Lance himself becomes the center of attention. He grows more compelling in the eyes of his girlfriend Claire, a fellow teacher who had once been drawn to their younger colleague Mike, and even more so to the acclaim flooding his life. Kyle’s real best friend, Andrew, grows wary when he uncovers Kyle’s suicide note and journals, sensing inconsistencies, but Lance brushes aside his concerns.

Publishers take notice, and Lance lands a national TV spot. The school library is renamed in Kyle’s honor, and the library dedication becomes a flashpoint where Lance must confront the consequences of his deceit. He delivers a speech that reveals his manipulation and admits that Kyle’s death was not intentional; he wrote the suicide note and the journal, effectively ending the false myth around his son. The fallout is swift: the students and faculty reject him, including Claire, and Lance confronts the painful realization that it might be better to be alone than to be surrounded by people who pretend to care.

Yet, in the aftermath of the confession, Lance experiences a strange rebirth. He acknowledges the loneliness of his true self but feels a renewed purpose in writing again. Andrew admits that he suspected the truth all along but still valued Kyle’s writings, and urges Lance to keep creating. The two friends share a quiet moment at home, watching a zombie movie with their neighbor Bonnie, choosing honesty and companionship over the hollow applause of a manufactured legacy.
