The bug chorus is voiced by a lively lineup of performers, including Elvia Allman, James Miller, Margie Hines, Eddie Prinz, Jimmie Cushman, C.B. Johnson, Thelma Porter, and Clarrie Collins, whose voices bring the rambunctious singers to life and help set the tempo for the entire showcase.

In the first act, the patrons arrive and check their hats, gloves, and canes at a gleaming counter, then settle into tables bathed in a soft glow from fireflies. A jazz band powers through a spirited rendering of Twelfth Street Rag, piecing together a sequence of comic musical moments: a tuba battle with a trumpeter, a leaf-chewing bug nibbles at the bass fiddle, a trombonist itches as he improvises, and a drummer keeps a full, bustling kit pounding away. The floor fills with dancing pairs, their steps snapping in time as two groups of trombonists and trumpeters rotate parts in a playful call-and-response. A centipede waiter threads through the crowd, delivering cherry wine poured from a single cherry, a tiny theatrical flourish that underlines the whimsy of this insect-run world.

The second act pairs dance and fantasy in a French Apache–style number, as a good-girl fly resists the advances of a bad-boy spider. The tension grows as the spider winds himself into his own web, ultimately tripping over his strategy and becoming tangled in the very trap he laid. The fly holds the upper hand, guiding the tempo and mood of the dance while the onlookers respond to each cue with delighted gasps and chuckles. The sequence unfolds as a witty tableau about flirtation, power, and comic peril, culminating in a playful reversal that keeps the audience smiling at the spider’s misfortune and the fly’s deft control of the moment.

The finale erupts on the dance floor as everyone cuts loose: the old bee and his red-ant partner keep pace with the faster dancers, while snails drift along at their own measured pace, adding a gentle counterpoint to the frenzy. The orchestra, buoyed by flowers-shaped instruments, belts out Truckin’ in a style reminiscent of Cab Calloway, delivering high-energy rhythm and exuberant vocalizing that invites the entire crowd to join in.
