Miyako Mizuki, a woman who enjoys a comfortable marriage to businessman Yuzo Mizuki, begins an affair with Kitano, who himself is engaged. She agrees to let Kitano photograph her nude, hoping to explore desire and vulnerability, but the photographs soon slip from her control and end up in the hands of Ginpei Momoi, a man who has been shadowing her and growing increasingly obsessed. Ginpei is drawn not just to Miyako but to the image of her, confessing that his attachment might be less about the woman herself and more about the idea of her captured on film.
As the danger mounts, Miyako agrees to meet Ginpei in Katamayazu, at Lake Shibayama in Ishikawa Prefecture, aware that Kitano will be following and that Kitano’s fiancée, Machie (/actor/keiko-natsu), is also involved in the web of pursuit and revelations. The confrontation intensifies when Ginpei has prints made of the negatives at a local photo shop, a move that spurs the shop owner to blackmail Miyako for money. Yet Ginpei’s motive runs deeper than money: his longing is not merely for her body, but for control and possession, a fixation rooted in the tension between reality and her image that first drew him to her.
The situation spirals after Miyako yields to Ginpei’s influence and sleeps with him, a choice she immediately regrets. In a desperate bid to sever the danger, she pushes Ginpei off a cliff. Returning to her hotel room, she is confronted by her husband, who has learned of the affair and her exact whereabouts from Kitano, complicating the couple’s already fragile dynamic. The revelation shatters the couple’s escape from exposure and foreshadows the consequences that will ripple through their lives.
On the train back to Tokyo, Miyako spots Ginpei alive, a stark reminder that the danger is not easily contained. She explains to him that her attempt to end the threat did not stem from hatred, but from a messy mix of fear, guilt, and the desire to reclaim some sense of control over her own life. As the train carries them forward, Ginpei’s gaze shifts away, leaving Miyako to confront the loneliness and fallout of her choices, a burden that shadows her long after the encounter has ended.
