Wise Quackers 1949

In a bitterly cold landscape, a migrating group of birds traces a southbound arc across a pale sky, and among them a weary Daffy Duck doubts whether he can make it to the warmer ground ahead. The harsh weather gnaws at him until he veers off course and crash-lands on the farm of Elmer Fudd, who wears his hunter’s attire like a trap waiting to spring. Seizing an opportunity for fresh game, the hunter assumes the role of guide, nudging the stumbling bird toward his own fields.

Daffy, unaware that this is a ruse, follows the directions through a foggy, breath-tinted yard until he careens into Elmer’s domain with a loud, jarring thud. He lands on a pitchfork, hops to his feet, and finds Elmer ready to make him a meal. In a tense show of wits, Daffy proposes a desperate bargain: he will become Elmer’s slave to stay alive, and the hunter agrees, perhaps tempted by the prospect of easy control.

Inside Elmer’s house, Daffy spots Elmer shaving and belts out a brisk command to stop, then snatches a towel to wipe his face and, in a cheeky move, flips the chair he’s seated on. He then dupe-s convincingly Elmer into handing over shaving tools, even joking about “fiveceps” and forceps as if they were ordinary implements. When Elmer uncovers the deception, he snaps to danger and draws his gun, but Daffy needles him with a quip about wanting “sixceps.” Frustrated and pressed, Elmer hustles the duck outside, gun in hand, to end the encounter.

The backyard becomes a stage for a new round of skirmishes. Daffy makes one more plea for mercy, claiming he has cooked something special for Elmer, and the hunter’s curiosity is piqued. Daffy scurries off, returns with a meal, and gleefully fans the flames of appetite. Inside again, Elmer is eager to taste the banquet, but Daffy insists on sampling first. He chews a chicken bone, then devours much of the dish himself, coughing at the heat of the flavor, but quickly regains his composure and finally grants Elmer a bite. The charade dissolves as Elmer realizes he’s been outwitted, and he storms after Daffy in a mix of exasperation and disbelief.

Outside, the trouble escalates as Daffy grabs Elmer’s axe and starts chopping at a tree in the yard. The tree crashes across to a neighbor’s house, causing a flimsy, comic wreck, and the neighbor appears, requesting a hammer. Elmer hands it over, and the neighbor hammers Elmer in retaliation and moves off—leaving a muddled hunter to reckon with the fallout.

Elmer, pushed to the brink, calls for his two pet dogs to corner the unruly duck. The dogs’ first plan falters, but they eventually coordinate and haul Daffy away offscreen to fulfill their duty. Back in the shack, Daffy pleads for mercy once more, promising not to whip him, and then, in a sly twist, slips the whip into Elmer’s grip and bolts away. He reappears moments later, disguised as Abraham Lincoln, to chastise Elmer for allegedly whipping slaves. The ruse flusters Elmer, and the disguised duck confiscates the whip before slipping into the distance, ending with the silhouette of the absurd parody fading as the scene iris out.
