In the depths of Nazi Germany during World War II, a brave 16-year-old girl named Leyna finds herself in a perilous fight for survival. Living with her white mother, Kerstin, and her younger half-brother, Koen, Leyna struggles under the shadow of a regime that condemns her very existence as the offspring of an interracial relationship. Her mother’s past keeps them constantly under threat, as they are pursued for being a target of hatred by the oppressive Gestapo.

To escape the looming danger, the family moves in with Kerstin’s unwilling sister, seeking refuge in her home. However, their troubles are compounded when a Hitler Youth named Lutz accidentally knocks Leyna down on his bicycle, igniting a complicated relationship that begins with mutual discomfort but soon evolves into something deeper. As Leyna endures the humiliation of being expelled from school, her mother secures her a job at a factory, allowing Lutz to see her frequently as he rides by on his bike. The son of a high-ranking SS officer, Lutz grapples with the heavy expectations of his family while wrestling with the cruel realities of the regime that he is a part of.

Amidst Kerstin’s teachings, Koen is coerced into the Hitler Youth, succumbing to the hateful ideas that surround him, ultimately turning against his sister. As Lutz and Leyna clandestinely pursue their growing affection for one another, their first kiss in the shadows marks an intense connection that leads them into deeper intimacy. However, the horrors of war soon invade their romance when Lutz must hide Leyna in his home as Nazi soldiers randomly search for dissenters on the streets.

Their lives take a dark turn when Kerstin is seized by soldiers, believing they have come for Leyna, leaving her children abandoned and vulnerable. Consumed by loss, Koen directs his fury towards Leyna, blaming her for their mother’s fate while they are forced to stay with their Aryan aunt.

As Leyna attempts to reconnect with Lutz, news of his sudden deployment to the frontlines reaches her. Simultaneously, she is sent to a labor camp where she discovers she is pregnant, a secret she knows could jeopardize her life—sterilization has been the grisly norm for those like her. Lutz, who has been assigned as a guard at the same camp, is horrified to find Leyna weakened yet determined to conceal the truth about their child. During a secret meeting, realizing the depth of their love and the life growing inside her, he implores her to flee with him.

Despite Lutz’s heartfelt pleas for freedom, Leyna understands the certainty of death that would follow any attempts to escape. A sudden American bombing gives Lutz hope for an escape plan, but tragedy strikes when he is caught and killed by his own father, desperate to keep them apart. In the heart-wrenching aftermath, Leyna is left in shock, immobilized by grief, until an American soldier arrives to lead her away from the chaos.

Seven weeks later, still carrying the weight of loss, Leyna finds herself in an American displacement camp, heavily pregnant but hopeful. Here, fate takes a miraculous turn as she is unexpectedly reunited with both her mother, Kerstin, and Koen, creating a glimmer of hope amidst the remnants of their shattered lives.
