Kuzma Kuzmich Iordanov is a World War II veteran who has never recovered from the loss of his wife. He drifts through daily life without steady work, taking odd jobs and spending a lot of time with alcohol. The local police occasionally call him in to reprimand his “parasitic” lifestyle, but the pressure hardly seems to bother him as he moves through a quiet, uncertain existence.

One day, he agrees to help an elderly woman deliver a washing machine to her building. The pricing is practical and a bit harsh—the cost changes depending on whether the building has an elevator, reflecting the extra time and effort required when stairs fight back against a heavy load. In the rush to get the machine to safety, he drops it while racing down the stairs, injuring himself and landing in the hospital.
