In 1914, Lois Wilson, a college-educated woman from an affluent family, meets and falls in love with Bill Wilson, a 19-year-old man of modest means. They marry in 1918, and after his return from World War I, they set out to build a life together.

Lois works as a nurse, while Bill struggles to find his niche. Lois believes that Bill is destined for greatness, and she showers him with love and steadfast support, even as his drinking begins to take hold. At a friend’s urging, Lois persuades the husband to hire Bill at his financial firm, a move that helps Bill step onto the path toward a more secure future. By 1927, Bill is working on Wall Street, and the couple enjoys a luxurious lifestyle. Yet alcohol’s grip remains strong, and despite Lois’s valiant efforts to keep the drinking in check, Bill’s addiction spirals out of control, taking a toll on his job, their finances, and the dreams they shared.

In 1935, after years of shouldering the burden largely alone, Lois finally witnesses a turning point: Bill achieves sobriety that endures — not solely through her care, but with the support of a fellow alcoholic, Dr. Bob Smith. Together, Bill and Bob go on to found Alcoholics Anonymous, offering a path to lasting sobriety for many. This shift leaves Lois feeling neglected, and she confronts a deep sense of isolation and resentment as she watches Bill rebuild his life apart from her.

Her own loneliness expands into a broader realization: there are countless families whose lives are wrecked by addiction, a truth that fuels a collective sense of responsibility. In response, Lois becomes a catalyst for change beyond their marriage: in 1951, she co-founds Al-Anon, a network dedicated to supporting loved ones affected by someone’s alcoholism or addiction. Through these efforts, she transforms her personal pain into a movement aimed at helping others endure and heal, underscoring a quietly powerful arc of resilience that runs parallel to Bill’s sober and shared pursuit of recovery.
