In 1920, the Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees were vying for the American League pennant alongside the White Sox. A tragic event occurred during a game at the Polo Grounds when Yankees pitcher Carl Mays unintentionally struck Indians player Ray Chapman with a pitch, leading to Chapman’s death – the only such fatality in Major League Baseball history. The devastating loss deeply affected Cleveland, sparking intense emotions both on and off the field. Despite the grief, the Indians, bolstered by the arrival of young shortstop Joe Sewell, rallied to secure their first World Series title, igniting a century-long rivalry with the Yankees.
