In New Guinea, Ned “Shark Eye” Kelley drifts into town on a raft, worn by malaria and the tropical heat. He has stumbled upon oil in a valley, a discovery that could change the region, but the local District Officer insists that the oil cannot be exploited until the area is officially opened up — a bureaucratic safeguard that frames the pursuit of wealth within rigid rules.
In Port Moresby, Steve MacAllister is about to depart on eight months of leave when he’s recalled to shepherd the expedition, since he is the only person with intimate knowledge of the area. He must help lay in an airstrip so geologists can reach the territory by plane, a logistical challenge that tests his leadership and resolve.
Along for the voyage is United Nations doctor Louise Dumarcet, a addition that leaves MacAllister feeling uneasy because it’s her first time in the tropics. Yet when a disease outbreak hits a town, Louise steps in to treat several children, showing calm competence under pressure and earning the crew’s respect.
The expedition reaches a village and encounters crocodile hunter Jeff Clayton. Kelley is reluctant to enter the village, revealing that his brother was killed by the locals. Despite his fears, the group presses forward. While Louise draws a patient’s blood, a villager who notices the procedure decides to retaliate by placing a snake in her bed. The venomous bite strikes Louise, but Jeff tends to her injuries and, in a moment of closeness, shares a kiss with her.
Tensions flare as the villagers rise up against the expedition, leading to a clash in which Kelley is speared to death. Yet the immediate crisis softens as the sick children recover, and the villagers, moved by the children’s improvement, help clear a path for an airstrip and a plane to land, marking a fragile, uneasy cooperation that allows the mission to continue.
