Volcano High 2001

On the cusp of graduation, Kyung-soo Kyung-soo has been expelled from several schools for losing control of his powers. Volcano High becomes his last chance, a place willing to take him in despite his reputation. On day one, he feels like an outsider, and the initial friendships he forms are with Shimma Shimma and Golbangi, the latter warning him about Chae-yi, known around the campus as the Icy Jade.

In a separate room, Hak-rim uses his abilities to brew a tea-based antidote for the principal. While delivering it, he averts a confrontation between Kyung-soo and Jang Ryang Jang Ryang, who dislikes a certain smell and resents the disruption. He reminds Ryang not to invite trouble as the moment of calm dissolves into anger.

Meanwhile, Hak-sa Jang Hak-sa, the Vice Principal, is determined to seize control of Volcano High from the former headmaster. He recruits Hak-rim into a scheme to frame the renowned martial artist for stealing an ancient manuscript believed to end a long-running feud. The plan goes awry when Hak-sa manages to imprison Hak-rim, while the principal remains alive, though temporarily put into a blissful coma, and the Dark Oxen gang begins to overrun the school.

Most students jump to conclusions, believing Kyung-soo framed Hak-rim, even as he denies the accusation. Yet Chae-yi Chae-yi trusts him and confides in Yo-seon Yo-seon that she suspects Ryang is behind the frame. The truth emerges when Ryang arrives with designs to win Chae-yi’s affections and rule Volcano High together; she rejects him, and Kyung-soo steps in to defend her. A confrontation with Ryang leaves Kyung-soo battered and briefly sidelined, his strength tested by personal obligations to his family and the urge to prove his innocence.

Hak-rim’s veteran insight convinces the pair that Kyung-soo may be their only hope to restore balance. They arrange a meeting with him, hoping he can confront the chaos. Yet Ryang’s schemes threaten to derail any chance at peace, and Hak-sa calls in Mr. Ma Mr. Ma and his cadre of instructors—the Five Teachers—to retake the school. The regime of punishments intensifies, and Kyung-soo strives to stay out of trouble, fearing the stigma of expulsion would crush his family’s pride.

As the tension escalates, Hak-rim recognizes a pivotal moment and guides Kyung-soo toward mastering his powers. Although Kyung-soo is reluctant, Hak-rim’s warnings—that he cannot escape his fate and must help restore order—start to take root. In a moment of training in the boys’ shower room, Kyung-soo hones his abilities, accidentally wetting Chae-yi in the process; her growing feelings for him become evident, and the connection between them strengthens.

Ryang grows increasingly furious—not only at Hak-sa’s actions but at the extent of the Gentlemen’s influence over the school. When he discovers the extent of the manipulation, Mr. Ma dispatches him, but the looming confrontation with Kyung-soo remains inevitable. The climactic showdown pits Kyung-soo against Mr. Ma in a protracted battle, culminating in Kyung-soo’s victory and Mr. Ma’s death.

Opening the supposed manuscript box reveals the shocking twist: there is no manuscript at all. The revelation stuns Ryang, Hak-sa, and the remaining teachers, but the students make it clear that Hak-rim’s claim—that the manuscript was a metaphor—was right all along. With Mr. Ma gone, the other four teachers withdraw their support, and Hak-sa’s hold on the school collapses.

In the aftermath, Hak-rim’s name is cleared, the principal returns to normal, and order begins to return to Volcano High. The students acknowledge that Kyung-soo was the one destined to restore balance with his abilities, and he graduates, bringing pride to his family at last. The closing scenes show Kyung-soo posing with the various clubs in photos, signaling a fresh, hopeful future.

Meanwhile, Chae-yi notices Yo-seon drafting another letter to Hak-rim and senses Yo-seon’s lingering affection for him. She gently encourages Yo-seon to reveal her feelings soon, though Yo-seon hesitates and continues writing. The arc ends with Hak-sa remaining in the induced coma, a symbol of the upheaval that Volcano High endured and the complex web of loyalties that eventually shifted toward harmony.
