Volcano: Fire on the Mountain 1997

A thrilling story begins with a young newlywed couple skiing near the summit of Angel Lakes Peak, a dormant volcano situated just outside the charming mountain town of Angel Lakes. As they enjoy their ride, disaster strikes when an unexpected volcanic fissure suddenly erupts right in front of them, causing both to fall victim to the powerful eruption and tragically lose their lives. This shocking event sets the stage for a sequence of escalating natural calamities.

The story’s focus then shifts to Peter Slater, a dedicated volcanologist portrayed by Dan Cortese, who resides and works in a small, isolated mountain town known for its scenic beauty. He diligently monitors volcanic activity through his equipment and quickly recognizes troubling signs: minor earthquakes ripple through the region, and animals on the mountain start dying off due to poisonous gases escaping from fumaroles. Peter becomes convinced that an imminent major eruption could devastate the entire area, but his warnings seem to fall on deaf ears. His ex-girlfriend, Kelly Adams (portrayed by Cynthia Gibb), is a ranger working for the local mountain patrol. Despite Peter’s urgent warnings, Kelly’s superiors and even she herself initially dismiss the threat, skeptical that such a dormant volcano could pose any real danger.

However, the mounting signs of danger become impossible to ignore when Kelly and her team narrowly escape an encounter with lethal volcanic gases while searching for the missing couple. Their rescue is made possible only thanks to Peter, who helps them escape the hazardous fumes. This incident forces Kelly to reconsider the severity of the threat, and she joins Peter in trying to alert the mayor, played by Don S. Davi, about the impending catastrophe. Surviving the initial blast, Peter and Kelly make their way down the mountain to ensure their safety and assess the damage. Peter firmly believes that a second eruption of even greater magnitude could produce a lethal lava flow capable of wiping out the entire town. With roads still impassable and rescue helicopters grounded by thick ash clouds, the town faces an urgent and desperate situation. The volcano’s violent activity escalates, prompting Kelly to come up with a daring plan: to use the snowcapped peaks of Angel Lakes and surrounding mountains to trigger a controlled snow avalanche that could potentially halt the advancing lava flow.

Despite Peter’s initial reluctance, understanding the limited options available, he joins Kelly in this risky effort. They set out on skis, planting explosives to induce the avalanche in hopes of saving the town. The plan succeeds, but amid the chaos of the avalanche’s powerful descent, Peter gets trapped and buried under the snow, while Kelly makes it into town just in time to witness the enormous snowmass engulfing the advancing lava, effectively blocking and solidifying it. Miraculously, Peter manages to dig himself out from the snow and reunite with Kelly, bringing relief and hope.

As the dust settles, the community begins to recover from the disaster, and the strained romance between Peter and Kelly is reignited, symbolizing their renewed connection amid the chaos.
