Lukas, an interpreter for the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe), finds himself in a tense, isolated situation when he and three colleagues embark on an inspection tour of military checkpoints near the Crimean border. The journey takes them across the barren southern Ukrainian steppe, where the landscape itself feels like a field test for nerves and endurance. They are accompanied by three colleagues, Scott Cavalheiro as Mack, Jess Salgueiro as Jess, and Hannah Cheesman as Hannah, whose presence heightens the sense of purpose and unease as the group presses forward into uncertain territory.

Their vehicle stalls and, with no cell phone reception to call for help, they push on until they reach Beryslav, a district in Kherson Oblast. Lukas searches for assistance in a town that feels distant from the routines of civilian life, but help remains elusive. Returning to the car, he discovers that his colleagues have vanished, leaving him with the car keys and a growing silence that seems to swallow the landscape whole.

Alone and stranded, Lukas is soon found by Vova, who arrives in a tank and transports him to a village perched above the Kakhovka Reservoir. The village exudes a rough, unpolished vitality, where the rules seem loose and the day-to-day life runs on its own precarious rhythm. Vova, a host with a jagged sense of humor and a strong sense of loyalty, and his daughter Marushka, welcome Lukas into their world. During his stay, Lukas endures a series of unsettling events, yet each time he is saved by Vova in ways that feel almost instinctual and improvised.

Living with Vova marks a turning point for Lukas. He experiences a kind of happiness long thought to be lost, a fragile relief in a setting that oscillates between danger and camaraderie. The longer he stays, the more he begins to grasp the village’s anarchic life, a stark contrast to conventional structures. Lukas may not always agree with Vova’s eccentricities, but he comes to depend on the stranger’s stubborn resolve and practical cunning in a place where danger lurks in many forms—drunken gangs armed with assault rifles, a police presence that may raid detainees, and the unsettling reality of slave labor. The village’s rough exterior stands in tension with a deep, shared history that slowly comes into focus for Lukas as he works to understand the people who inhabit it.

As the days pass, Lukas discovers that the villagers’ identities are inextricably tied to their collective past, a history that helps explain why life unfolds in such a raw and unfiltered way. His attraction to Marushka grows, complicating his sense of loyalty and desire. He finds himself drawn to Vova’s peculiar charm and stubborn resilience, seeing in him a complicated ally who can navigate perilous schemes and dangerous opportunities. This bond propels Lukas toward a surprising partnership as they eventually join forces in one of Vova’s audacious get-rich schemes—an expedition that leads them to explore a drowned village submerged beneath the reservoir, a haunting reminder of loss and memory that reshapes Lukas’s understanding of happiness, purpose, and humanity.

Throughout this turbulent odyssey, the line between safety and risk blurs, and Lukas must decide what kind of life he wants to inhabit. The story unfolds with a restrained, observational tone that favors character-driven moments and the ambiguities of moral choice, inviting viewers to weigh loyalty, longing, and survival in a landscape where shelter is scarce, but human connection remains a possible lifeline. In the end, Lukas’s time in the village becomes less about escape and more about immersion—learning to read a place where autonomy clashes with survival, where affection can bloom in unlikely soil, and where the past continues to echo in every present action. >

Note: This summary preserves the original narrative arc while expanding its emotional and thematic texture, maintaining a neutral, contemplative tone and emphasizing the interpersonal dynamics that drive Lukas’s transformation.
