Veerasamy 2007

Veerasamy is a lawyer, party leader and MLA in Chennai who strives to do good for the people he serves. His world is rooted in public service, yet his personal life becomes entangled in a complicated web of love and loyalty when his sister Senthamizh falls for a man connected to trouble, and a neighbour Sarasu falls in love with him.

Even though [Sarasu]’s family background and the job she does—selling black-ticket theater entries—clash with Veerasamy’s ideology, he welcomes her into his home, a decision she eagerly volunteers for even as she repeatedly flirts with him. In a tense confrontation, she confesses her love for him, which he rejects. Angrily, she declares that she cannot live without him, and to derail a potential tragedy, he persuades her to promise not to attempt suicide, a vow she reluctantly accepts.

As the story unfolds, Veerasamy learns that his sister is in love with his arch-nemesis’s brother, a match he cannot approve of, and he withdraws from her. Frustrated, Senthamizh ends the relationship, and the would-be couple seeks a meeting with Veerasamy’s consent. To prove his worth, the lover goes to the other side’s house, only to be confronted by her brother and beaten. Fearing a worst-case outcome, she begs him to leave, but he remains determined to demonstrate that he is worthy of Veerasamy’s sister.

The lover’s persuasion finally seems to gain ground, and there is talk of marriage, but a cruel twist arrives when an arrogant sister—standing in for a stern family code—demands that Veerasamy bow to her terms and beg forgiveness in open court. Furious, Veerasamy’s sister insists that her brother holds the deepest place in her life; she would endure losing the love of her life but cannot bear to humiliate her brother, announcing that she is not interested in the marriage.

Meanwhile, Sarasu’s family, obsessed with money, sells their daughter to a drug addict who torments her. Veerasamy is consumed by guilt upon learning of her suffering, and it is revealed that he, too, harbors a secret love for Sarasu. At a later moment, the drug addict sells Sarasu to another man, who forces her to sleep with him. Driven to desperation, she kills her husband and hurries to Veerasamy in tears.

During these upheavals, Veerasamy’s sister contemplates a new arrangement and Moises-style plots to bring some relief to her pain by finding a groom for herself, sharing with Veerasamy the details of her earlier romances, which their family seems to overlook. The scheming mastermind among the pimp’s circle grows frustrated by the tangled state of affairs, and the parties involved finally converge on Veerasamy to seek a resolution. She confesses and pleads for Veerasamy to secure her sister’s marriage to the man she loves. Veerasamy weeps, explaining that he had already arranged a groom for his sister and that the wedding reception is today.

At the same time, Sarasu appears before Veerasamy and admits that she killed her husband. Overcome with guilt, Veerasamy acknowledges the depth of unfulfilled love and, choosing mercy over judgment, allows his sister to marry the man she loves. The groom’s parents arrive in a furious confrontation, hurling harsh words that wound Veerasamy deeply and push him to a breaking point, ultimately leading to his death.

News of Veerasamy’s death reaches Sarasu, who collapses in shock, fainting and breaking her anklet as she dies of heartbreak. Her death seals the message: love that cannot be fully lived becomes the most poignant tragedy of all. The film closes with the two lovers gone and a grieving Veerasamy’s sister, left to mourn the consequences of a tangled web of loyalties, love, and pride.
