A man serving a 20-year sentence at Monteforte prison, while he works on making toys for children, hides a plea inside a papier-mâché horse, urging anyone who finds it to help him win his freedom.

The horse, after a sequence of events, falls into the hands of five schoolmates: Gianni, Andrea, Mario, Ugo, and Nino. They hatch a plan to orchestrate an escape and dream of all getting promoted so they can go on vacation to Monteforte.

As summer arrives, the boys anonymously send a cake to the prisoner, prisoner no. 5823, with a ticket tucked inside; however, the prisoner is in a cell shared with no. 6211, a dangerous criminal, who also receives the cake and discovers the ticket.

By a twist of fate, the associates of no. 6211 are preparing an escape for their own partner.

The story thickens with the involvement of Amelia, the beautiful singer, who enters the criminals’ circle. When she meets the boys, she convinces them that the life prisoner is her brother, pushing them to rush the escape and inadvertently freeing the gangster Jack Menotti.

The boys shelter the fugitive in an abandoned boat, only to realize too late that they have been misled. The police arrive, cuff the criminal, and, some time later, release prisoner no. 5823.
