In the coastal village of Valivalam, near Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, a wealthy chieftain and his family hold sway over land and wealth. The couple’s only son, Ramu, finds himself drawn to a girl named Lakshmi, a romance that faces a serious obstacle: Lakshmi’s father Arunagiri is entangled in a legal dispute over property. Despite the tension surrounding the dowry of assets, Ramu manages to win his family’s consent to the marriage, believing love can soften old grievances.

The marriage awakens a troubling, scheming undercurrent within Lakshmi’s in-laws. They fear that Arunagiri might still triumph in court and threaten to strip them of their own wealth. Their plan to keep control hinges on deception, and for a time, Lakshmi is treated well after the wedding. Her father buys her a voice-responsive, battery-operated doll—an eerie companion that will become central to the story’s haunting turn.

Soon after, Lakshmi becomes pregnant, and the court case against Arunagiri collapses. He loses his wealth to the opposing party and dies, leaving Lakshmi heartbroken and the chieftain’s family furious and unsettled. The doom that follows seems to fit the greed that had always shadowed the family’s dealings with land and power. In the wake of this loss, the relatives hatch a cruel plan to accuse Lakshmi of an illicit relationship with a servant named Anchezhuthu. The accusation strains the already fragile trust within the household, and Ramu—once hopeful—begins to doubt Lakshmi’s character. Is she the wife he believed, or a conspirator in the schemes that plague the family?

Ostracized and isolated, Lakshmi is forced to live in a storeroom with nothing but her doll for companionship. The in-laws’ treachery grows bolder: they intend to abuse Lakshmi and then replace her with a richer wife, consolidating their hold on the family’s wealth. Lakshmi overhears their scheme, and in a moment of rage, she vows to reveal the truth to her husband. When she tries to flee, she is intercepted by her uncle-in-law, Nalla Thambi, and a brutal struggle ensues. In the chaos, Lakshmi is stabbed with a broken soda bottle and dies. Before she passes, she makes a vow of revenge on those responsible for her death, and a dark magic seems to seep from her into the doll.

Lakshmi’s body is hidden beneath a pile of wood and taken to a local temple where a ritual of fire-walking and ceremonial flames will take place. When Ramu returns, the family covers up the murder by claiming Lakshmi eloped with the servant Anchezhuthu. Believing the story, Ramu lights the ceremonial fire, unknowingly cremating Lakshmi’s body along with the truth.

With Lakshmi gone but not defeated, the family pressures Ramu to remarry. He is persuaded to marry a wealthy woman named Chandra. At first distant, Ramu’s heart gradually opens to Chandra, and their marriage begins to deepen. Meanwhile, Lakshmi’s vengeful spirit lingers in the doll, waiting for the moment to unleash its fury.

A pivotal moment arrives during a planned movie night when Ramu’s mother, Vadivu, stays home because of a headache. Possessed by Lakshmi’s spirit, the doll erupts in tragedy, setting Vadivu ablaze and making the death seem accidental. Anchezhuthu, the servant who had fled after Lakshmi’s murder, returns to demand money, but the vengeful doll makes short work of him as well, removing yet another obstacle in Lakshmi’s path to justice.

The family’s guilt then reveals itself in a deadly turn: Muthu Manickam, the chieftain, is gored by a bull spurred on by Lakshmi’s spirit, and on his deathbed he confesses the truth—that Lakshmi was innocent and that the family had murdered her. Overcome with guilt, Ramu confronts Nalla Thambi. The uncle suspects that Chandra is the conduit for Lakshmi’s wrath, but the possessed doll sees through the ruse and brutally kills him, bringing the vengeance to a shocking close.

Lakshmi’s spirit torments Chandra, taunting her with the promise that she will take Ramu to the spirit realm so they can be together forever. Ramu endures another attack but survives, and Chandra decides to confront the danger directly. She performs ritual dances and rites before the temple’s ceremonial pyre, hoping to end the haunting. In a climactic moment, she burns the possessed doll; it seems to perish, only to reanimate again. A guruji advises that the doll must be destroyed with the Goddess’s Trident, and Chandra obeys, ending the doll’s malevolent life.

At last, Lakshmi’s spirit finds peace at the feet of the goddess, freed from the tether of vengeance. In a quiet, enduring rebuilding of trust, Ramu and Chandra come together, and they begin a life together free from the curse that had shadowed her early days. The tale closes with a sense of restored balance—the union of two souls and a village spared from the worst of greed’s consequences, as the memory of Lakshmi’s suffering gives way to a future built on love and the hard-won peace of reconciliation.
