What Is Under The White Mask: The Film That Haesaerts Could Have Made About?
The premise of Under The White Mask: The Film That Haesaerts Could Have Made without spoilers.
This film reinterprets Paul Haesaerts' 1958 film, Under the Black Mask, which explored Congolese art and has been criticized as colonial propaganda. Imagining a perspective shift, the documentary gives voice to the masks themselves, transforming them from mere objects into subjects. Notably, Aimé Césaire’s powerful Discourse on Colonialism is spoken for the first time in Lingala, offering a continued critique of European perspectives. The film utilizes existing elements from the original 1958 work.
