Antonio Catalano returns to his fictional hometown of Cusano in Irpinia after completing military service. Unemployed and tasked with supporting his widowed mother Antonio’s Mother and caring for his five sisters, he faces a hard road ahead. A romance develops with Carmela, a strong and beautiful girl, but financial difficulties keep their plans for marriage out of reach, especially since Carmela’s father, Pasquale Artu, offers little help. One sister named Giuliana faces pressure from a landowner who won’t marry her without a dowry.

To make ends meet, Antonio takes on odd jobs, starting as a carriage assistant, then working with drivers to form a cooperative for a bus service. The plan collapses when the drivers prove incompetent and greed-driven, leaving Antonio to pick up the pieces.

Hired as the parish priest sacristan, Antonio secretly aligns with a communist group in Naples at night. Carmela discovers his double life during a quarrel, and as a result the priest dismisses him from his post.

Seeking new opportunities, Antonio eventually finds employment in Naples with Flora Angelini Flora Angelini, a refined cinema owner who relies on him to transport film reels. He also donates his blood to help her sick son who requires constant transfusions.

Flora appreciates Antonio’s rugged charm, but his loyalty to Carmela remains strong. Carmela’s jealousy leads to a confrontation that costs him his job once more.

Carmela dreams of a bold escape to persuade her family to accept their relationship, but she falters at the last moment. In the end, the couple returns to Cusano and announces their intent to marry, buoyed by the support of local market vendors who provide clothing on credit to help them start their life together.
