Sulochana “Sulu” Dubey, Vidya Balan, is a warm-hearted, middle-class housewife living in Virar with her husband, Ashok Dubey, Manav Kaul, and their 11-year-old son, Pranav. She cherishes every moment at home but harbors a quiet dream of working outside the house. Her incomplete high school education blocks her from taking on white-collar roles, a truth that her elder twin sisters constantly remind her of. Ashok Dubey works as a manager at a tailoring firm, a position that wears on him because his colleagues are older and set in their ways. The company is soon taken over by the owner’s grandson, a rude, abusive figure who makes life at work even more suffocating. At school, Pranav endures taunts from a group of delinquent classmates who traffic in adult magazines and videos.

One day, Sulu wins a contest from her favorite radio station and heads to claim the prize. At the studio, she spots a poster advertising auditions for an RJ, and a spark of possibility lights up her eyes. The boss, Maria, Neha Dhupia, seems intrigued by Sulu’s natural energy and gives her a chance to audition. Sulu delivers a lively, unguarded performance, and she ends with a bold, sensual line that impresses Maria:

“Hello”

Impressed, Maria offers Sulu a chance to host a call-in night show where listeners confide their problems. Sulu accepts, thrilled at the opportunity to express herself and connect with others. Initially, Ashok is irritated that his wife has taken on this job without a word, but his love for her wins out, and he supports her decision as the family negotiates the changes ahead.

As the show goes on, Sulu finds her footing, her confidence grows, and she becomes more worldly in a way that excites her but strains the balance at home. The show’s success deepens Sulu’s sense of self, while Ashok wrestles with his own frustrations—both at work and with his new boss—leading to mounting tension between them. The couple’s harmony begins to fray as Sulu’s life expands beyond the kitchen and the bedroom.

The turning point comes at Pranav’s school. The principal reveals that Pranav has been involved in stealing a phone and showing adult videos to other kids, even going so far as to forge his father’s signatures. Pranav is suspended, and the affair becomes a source of intense conflict at home. Sulu’s sisters blame her for neglecting her son and let her know that her limited education is a liability. She refuses to quit, standing firm in her commitment to her work and her family. A crushing note arrives: Pranav is missing. The family searches, and Pranav’s note reveals his shame and his plea for his mother’s work to continue in his absence. He asks his father to support his mother and her life.

The police eventually locate Pranav and bring him home. After a tense moment of reckoning, Sulu resigns from the radio show, hoping to restore balance at home. Yet a spark remains. On the way out of the studio, she sees the receptionist, RJ Albeli Anjali, Malishka Mendonsa, entangled in a quarrel with the tiffin service guy. Seizing a new possibility, Sulu pitches to Maria the idea of taking over the station’s tiffin service contract, blending her entrepreneurial spirit with her new life. In the final turn, Ashok steps in to manage the tiffin business, and Sulu returns to the airwaves, juggling household duties and a budding professional life on her own terms and with renewed balance.
