After fifteen years in preventive detention, Frank Keller, accused of murdering a policewoman, seeks release but is denied. In a desperate act, he seizes his lawyer and escapes the courtroom, initially seeking out police instructor Bruno Theweleit. Young policewoman Lena Frey begins investigating the case, uncovering inconsistencies in the original account of the shooting, which occurred fifteen years prior. Her pursuit attracts the disapproval of Theweleit and Inspector Günther Lehmann, both implicated in the incident, and leads her to question Keller's guilt.
