In the early 1980s in Spain, Lola discovers she is pregnant and marries Adolfo, the man she believes fathered her child. During the wedding, Lola suffers a miscarriage and is told she cannot bear children again, plunging her into a deep depression.

To fill the void, the couple turns to a nearby convent orphanage and ends up adopting twins, Tin and Tina, who are older than they had planned and carry a striking albinism. The twins bring a surprising gift for music and a rigid, almost fanatical sense of faith that unsettles Lola. Although she and Adolfo are not religious, they pretend to be devout to make the twins happy and secure a sense of belonging in their new family.

As the siblings settle in, their odd religious rituals grow more unsettling. They stage biblical games that feel almost lethal, and a family dog is harmed in a strange cleansing ritual, leaving Lola shaken and worried. When Tin and Tina have their first communion, a classmate who bullied them falls into a coma; Lola fears the twins are responsible, while Adolfo remains in denial and dismissive of her concerns.

On New Year’s Eve, Lola experiences another life-changing moment: she learns she is pregnant again. The twins become excited at the prospect of a little brother or sister, and Lola starts to distance herself from them. In a tense confrontation, Tin and Tina bind Lola and try to inject her with a syringe to “feed the baby,” prompting Lola to defend herself with a knife. Her water breaks, she gives birth, and the twins insist on baptizing the newborn. Lola refuses, and the moment escalates as the children attempt to baptize themselves by drowning the baby, while Adolfo burns their Bible in response.

The strain of fear and doubt fractures Lola and Adolfo’s marriage. Tin and Tina are sent back to the convent, and a house fire soon follows, in which Adolfo is killed by the flames and Lola loses her baby in the chaos. Suspecting the children’s involvement, Lola teeters on the edge of despair, nearly harming herself in a desperate urge to reach God, before discovering her baby alive and fleeing the burning house.

In the hospital, the convent’s head reveals that Adolfo has died, struck by lightning, and that Lola and the baby survived—a miraculous outcome the head insists the twins were not involved in. The head also suggests the children have always been innocent, a claim Lola longs to believe. The film closes with Lola at her husband’s funeral, having re-adopted Tin and Tina and prepared to face the future with a fragile, renewed family.
