A lonely widow longing for a child of her own is given a barley seed by a friendly witch. The planted seed grows into a flower, and a tiny girl emerges from inside, no bigger than the old woman’s thumb. The old woman names the tiny girl Thumbelina and raises her as her own. Although Thumbelina loves her mother, she craves companionship from someone her own size. One night, the fairy prince Cornelius stumbles upon Thumbelina after hearing her singing, and he becomes the first person she has ever met who is roughly her own size. The two share a magical ride on Cornelius’ bumblebee and soon fall in love, a bond that fills Thumbelina with hope for a life beyond the quiet cottage.

Yet danger shadows their budding happiness. Mrs. Toad, enchanted by Thumbelina’s singing during the ride, abducts her with designs to force Thumbelina into a marriage with her son Grundel and to join a traveling troupe. Thumbelina’s rescue comes from Jacquimo, a romantic and witty swallow, who carries Thumbelina to safety and away from the clutches of the Toad family. Back in the fairy realm, Cornelius races home to plead with his parents to delay winter as long as possible, hoping to buy Thumbelina time. They can only manage to push winter back for a day, but that fleeting reprieve keeps Thumbelina connected to her love.

Meanwhile, Grundel learns of Thumbelina’s escape and sets out in pursuit. On her journey toward home, Thumbelina encounters Berkeley Beetle, a flashy pop singer who promises to show her the way if she performs at his Beetle Ball. Reluctantly she agrees, but the Beetle’s flamboyant disguise is ripped away, exposing Thumbelina to the crowd where she is denounced as “ugly” and publicly humiliated. Beetle is unable to help her, and Thumbelina’s spirits sink. She is eventually found by Jacquimo again, who promises to locate Cornelius, but Beetle’s association with Grundel intensifies the danger.

Grundel hatches a plan to capture Thumbelina by convincing Beetle to help him lure the prince away. He coerces Beetle by removing Beetle’s wings, making the trap seem credible. As winter approaches, Jacquimo is injured and grounded, while Cornelius slips into a pond and becomes frozen. Beetle discovers Cornelius and delivers him to Grundel. Thumbelina, fleeing to safety, finds refuge in an old shoe and is later taken in by Miss Fieldmouse and her boss, Mr. Mole, who has hired Grundel to capture Thumbelina so he can vie for her affections and erase her memory of Cornelius.

With Cornelius presumed lost, Thumbelina’s hope dims, and she collapses under the weight of despair. Jacquimo, revived just in time, pushes to find the truth about Cornelius before Thumbelina’s wedding to Mr. Mole can proceed. Beetle discovers Thumbelina’s predicament and warns Grundel, who fires Beetle after his earlier misstep. As Thumbelina prepares to wed Mr. Mole, the truth about Cornelius surfaces: he is alive and searching for her, and Thumbelina cannot bear to marry someone else while she waits for him.

A dramatic chase unfolds, and Cornelius arrives to confront Grundel. The two engage in a heated struggle that ends with them tumbling into a deep hole, while Thumbelina escapes with a treasure-laden pile from Mr. Mole’s wedding hall, which unsettles the ceremony and disrupts the scheming plans. Jacquimo follows the path to the Vale of the Fairies and returns Thumbelina there, where she and Cornelius are finally reunited. In a magical moment, Thumbelina’s own wings sprout, granting her the ability to soar alongside Cornelius as they kiss and pledge to marry.

The fairy court, Thumbelina’s mother, Jacquimo, and their insect brood witness the union as Thumbelina and Cornelius depart on the bumblebee for a life together. The world around them settles into a lighter cadence: Beetle continues his pop career now that his wings have regrown, Grundel endures a fall but finds unexpected happiness with a new love, and Mr. Mole’s alliance with Miss Fieldmouse leads to a quiet, if unconventional, happy ending. Even the creatures who had plotted against Thumbelina—the rabbit and the fox—find friendship along the way. In the end, Thumbelina and Cornelius’s love endures, a testament to courage, resilience, and the possibility of a magical future when two hearts dare to believe.
