Adam Neil Amituanai is a young New Zealand-born Samoan man who dreams of becoming a ‘real island guy’ to impress his crush, Mary Gloria Blake. He leaves New Zealand to return to his homeland, traveling to Samoa to find his cousins so he can learn and practice Faʻa Sāmoa in the hope of winning Mary’s heart. In his native land, he hopes to shed his current routine and show a side of himself that aligns with the island life he admires.

Back in New Zealand, Adam is unemployed and spends most of his time on his PlayStation, while his parents wake up early for work to support the family. The contrast between his comfortable, screen-filled days and the hard-working rhythm of his family’s life weighs on him, setting the stage for a transformation he feels he must undertake to be taken seriously by Mary.
