A French Muslim woman Hafsia Herzi leaves the rough edges of Paris behind and travels to New York City to visit her childhood best friend Zahra, Sarah Kazemy.

Zahra, now fully assimilated into Western life, explains to her much older boyfriend Gabe Fazio that Hafsia stinks and shouldn’t stay, a moment Hafsia overhears.

Hafsia then seizes Zahra’s credit card and identity, and disappears to a remote cabin upstate, seeking a new space to belong and to regroup.

Deep in the woods, all alone for the first time in her life, she experiences a divine revelation that challenges how she sees herself and the world around her.

Zahra arrives to try to convince Hafsia to return with her, but Hafsia refuses, choosing the solitude she has found over a return to the city.

An animal breaks into Hafsia’s cabin and steals all the food, underscoring her vulnerability and the precariousness of survival in isolation.

Initially a lifeline, teacher Rose, Lucy Walters, and policeman Darren, Kevin Kane, offer help and human connection, pulling Hafsia into a fragile circle of care.

Yet the story deepens into a portrait of fear and misunderstanding. Hafsia begins to see intolerance and suspicion echoing back from a country that often treats Islam as a stereotype, a climate that feels all too Islamophobic in a post-9/11 world.

The film uses Hafsia’s journey to probe themes of racism, naïveté baked into some white American perspectives, and the profound difficulties of being a Muslim woman in a world that can be quick to judge and slow to understand.
