In a rural village, brothers Chidambaram and Nataraj belong to a long line of musicians who vow to never sing for money, convinced a family curse would claim their lives if they profane their art for profit. When poverty tightens its grip, Nataraj travels to Madras in search of work, lodging at the home of Damodharam, a friend of Chidambaram. Damodharam’s daughter, Vani, falls for Nataraj, and the two begin a delicate dance between affection and ambition. Hearing of his friend’s financial strain, Damodharam sends money to Chidambaram, but Chidambaram rejects the gift, adhering to his creed that help must be earned rather than handed over. This firm stance fuels tension: Vani grows frustrated by what she sees as needless pride, and Nataraj ends up leaving the house to fend for himself.

On the streets, Nataraj performs a brave act, saving a clerk from robbers, who in turn offers him shelter. Vani learns of this new refuge and begins to feel compassion for the young musician, seeing in his struggle a different kind of dignity. As events unfold, Damodharam pushes forward with plans for a marriage, while Vani discovers an unexpected truth: Nataraj can sing. She arranges for him to perform on a radio broadcast, hoping to prove that talent can flourish within the framework of hard work and earned rewards. Nataraj retrieves his courage and, despite invoking the family curse, Vani treats it as superstition and encourages him to proceed. The performance earns him money, which he promptly sends back to his elder brother, reinforcing his sense of responsibility.

Meanwhile, Nataraj takes in Mullai, another young woman in need of a place to stay, which raises further questions about loyalty and love. Vani grows wary and puts the marriage plans on hold, unsettled by the idea that money has begun to change the family’s dynamics. The moment of reckoning arrives when Chidambaram learns that Nataraj sang for money, and he dies of shock. Devastated by his father’s death and the weight of what has happened, Nataraj returns to the village and descends into a fragile mental state, with doctors declaring that medicine cannot restore him. Mullai resolves that restoring Nataraj requires bringing Vani back into his life. The film then follows how these intertwined fates unfold, tracing themes of pride, art, family responsibility, and the fragile line between belief and reality.
