Robert Ross, a secretive teen from a comfortable Toronto suburb, confides only in his mentally disabled sister Rowena. He feels pity for his weak father and avoids confronting his domineering mother, whose bitterness stems from Rowena’s condition. After her death he rebels, joins the Canadian army in 1914, trains in Alberta and Montreal, and serves in England and France, using the war to battle his inner conflicts.
