The Veldt 1987

In a vast, gloom-laden mansion, the Stone family—Michael, his wife Linda, and their children Peter and Wendy—drift apart as silence hardens into an everyday habit. The kids spend endless hours in a virtual reality room, where their minds swim through imagined scenarios, with a persistent fixation on a hunting scene of African lions. Despite Michael’s attempt to lock the room shut, his gesture only deepens the rifts and animosities that fester between them.

Away from the mansion, on a windswept beach, an old fisherman named Hernando and his blind wife Cora inhabit a modest hut, their lives consumed by memories of their deceased son Tom. Their quiet world is disrupted when a boy arrives, bearing an uncanny resemblance to Tom, stirring a fragile hope of connection. This fragile idyll is abruptly broken when a quarantine team descends, sweeping through the shack and the lives it shelters, destroying creatures living among people who appear as their late relatives.

As the night unfolds, Michael finds himself drawn into a perilous confrontation with the quarantine force. He is captured and condemned to a ravine, left for dead yet clinging to life. Barely able to move, he stumbles toward the ruins of an old church, where he encounters Hernando, whose own history with loss begins to illuminate the strange events surrounding them.

Back at home, Michael fights to gather his family and escape the nightmare that grips their world. But his children resist the idea of leaving the life they know, and they pull their parents into the nursery, turning it into a trap where the parents fall prey to the same lion-haunted danger that stalks their otherwise familiar space.

Amid the chaos, Hernando, carrying a massive wooden cross taken from the church, toils to reshape the dunes as if seeking some sacred order in the waking nightmare. His work catches the eye of a madman known only as “Gandhi”, a figure whose watchful eye seems to measure the boundary between memory and reality, hope and despair. The film threads together themes of memory, isolation, and the fragile line between loved ones and the dangers that blur the lines between life and illusion.
