Following the quelling of Lajos Kossuth’s 1848 revolution against Habsburg rule, Hungary established prison camps to hold people suspected of supporting Kossuth. About twenty years later, some members of highwayman Sándor Rózsa’s guerrilla band are known to be interned among the prisoners. The prison staff employ a mix of mental pressure, physical torment, and cunning tricks to identify the rebels and to determine whether Sándor himself is among them. One captive, Gajdar János, János Görbe is singled out as a murderer by an old woman, Ida Siménfalvy, and he begins aiding his captors by acting as an informant. He is told that if he can show his captors a man who has killed more people than himself, he will be spared. Fearing for his life, he turns in several people the guards had been seeking by name but unable to identify among the prisoners.

Gajdar becomes an outcast among the inmates and is murdered at night by some of his fellow prisoners while in solitary confinement. The prison guards quickly identify suspects—those whose cells have been left unlocked—and begin interrogating them in the hope of locating Sándor himself. The suspects are tricked into revealing the remaining guerrillas when they are given a chance to form a new military unit out of former bandits, and are informed that Sándor, who was not among the prisoners, has been pardoned. Yet the celebrating guerrillas are then told that those who previously fought under him will still face execution.
