Sara Matthews begins her first year of college in Los Angeles, stepping into a new chapter that quickly pulls her into a tense triangle of friendship, secrecy, and danger. On campus, she befriends two fellow students who shape much of her college experience: Tracy, a party-loving classmate, and Stephen, a charming but earnest love interest who tries to anchor Sara as the social world swirls around them. Sara also shares a dorm with Rebecca, a wealthy and shy roommate who immediately bears a striking and unsettling resemblance to Sara herself. What starts as a chance connection soon grows into something far more troubling as Rebecca’s fascination with Sara deepens into an obsession that reshapes Sara’s life.
From the start, Rebecca seems to want to mold Sara’s circle and push anyone who might threaten their closeness away. She dismisses potential rivals as bad influences and acts on that belief with alarming violence. A target becomes Tracy when Rebecca attacks her in the shower, pins her down, rips out a belly button ring, and issues a chilling ultimatum to keep away from Sara. Tracy relocates to another dorm, terrified by Rebecca’s unpredictable intensity. The danger doesn’t stop there: an old friend named Irene notices Sara’s growing bond with Rebecca and invites Sara to move in when a disruption involving Sara’s cat, Cuddles, is discovered.
Rebecca’s madness escalates quickly as she fabricates stories of assault and betrayal to manipulate Sara. She kills Cuddles and deceives Sara about the cat’s disappearance, while also feigning hardship of her own by claiming she has been assaulted. Sara’s sympathy for Rebecca deepens, and she agrees to spend Thanksgiving with her—an unsettling decision that places Sara in ever more precarious emotional territory. The tension intensifies when a professor, Roberts, who was involved in Sara’s life, kisses her; Rebecca schemes to remove any obstacle by recording a conversation that makes it seem like the professor was pushing Sara toward an unwanted encounter, a ploy intended to ruin him and sever any sense of trust Sara might have left.
During the holiday break, Sara overhears Rebecca speaking with her father and learns that Rebecca has had trouble making friends, a detail that is eventually linked to her fragile grip on reality. Sara becomes concerned about the pills found in Rebecca’s room—unused Zyprexa, a medication used to manage serious mental health conditions—hinting at deeper personal struggles beneath Rebecca’s polished exterior. The uneasy peace fractures as Sara decides to move in with Irene for safety, only to witness Rebecca’s calculated manipulation unfold once more when Rebecca seduces Irene and returns with Sara’s sense of security shattered.
The danger reaches a fever pitch when Rebecca secretly tattoos Sara’s sister’s name on her own body, signaling a disturbing fixation that confirms her obsession. Alarmed, Sara begins to reclaim control of her life, packing up belongings and stepping away from the dorm. The fragile balance is further destabilized when Jason, a former partner of Sara’s, slips a note under Sara’s door with a desire to reconnect. Rebecca, ever vigilant, intercepts the note and impersonates Sara, then travels to Jason’s hotel room to deliver a fatal stab wound.
A text from Irene summons Sara to a confrontation, and she arrives to find Irene gagged and bound, a stark setup that leaves Sara vulnerable as Rebecca reveals the full extent of her delusions and declares her love in a chilling confession. Rebecca admits that every cruel act—against Tracy, Cuddles, Professor Roberts, Irene, and Jason—was a calculated bid to win Sara’s friendship and control her world. The confrontation escalates into a dramatic struggle: Rebecca aims a gun at Sara and Irene, while Stephen briefly disables Rebecca but is knocked unconscious in the process. Sara fights to break free, but Rebecca escapes into the room with a renewed urge to finish what she started.
In a harrowing climax, Sara regains a moment of clarity and defends herself with a box cutter, delivering the final blow that ends Rebecca’s life with the brutal line that marks the emotional arc of their relationship: > You were never my friend.
With danger finally abated, Sara returns to her dorm and reassesses her living situation, determined to shield herself from further manipulation. She moves the extra bed out of her room with Stephen’s help and resolves to avoid sharing living space with a roommate for the foreseeable future, choosing caution over companionship as she navigates the turbulent memories of the ordeal. The film closes on a note of wary resilience, a reminder that danger can disguise itself as familiarity, and that reclaiming a sense of safety often requires rebuilding one’s boundaries from the ground up.
