Mother Mother prepares a birthday cake for her husband, Big Ed’s birthday. In the adjacent room, Ed Jr. tries to clean his father’s hunting rifle to surprise him, but a tragic misfire cuts through the wall and kills Mother. When the husband returns home, he discovers his wife’s body and is driven to a devastating outburst, beating a terrified Ed Jr. in a moment of raw, frightening grief.

Years later, Ed Jr., now in college, is asked by his father to close up the family’s beachfront condominium in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, a place Big Ed uses as a kind of clubhouse for himself and his hunting partners. He’s joined by Linda, Mike, Ralph, Sue, and Pam, all eager for something to do over fall break. Unbeknownst to the group, the father has been waiting in the basement with a plan to end the life of his own son. They arrive and the nightmare begins in earnest.

Over the course of the night, the killer operates with cold efficiency, targeting Ed’s friends one by one: drowning Linda in the pool, cutting Mike open with a boat motor, decapitating a police officer, impaling Ralph with a flounder gig, and gutting Sue with a large fishing gaff—their bodies starkly hidden away in the condominium’s basement as the house settles into a tense, claustrophobic quiet.

When Ed Jr. and Pam stumble upon the grisly remains, they notice the killer approaching and slip into a tense hide-and-seek that tests every nerve. Ed Jr. is eventually found by his father, who stabs him in the leg but cannot finish the job. Pam intervenes, stabbing the killer, and the struggle erupts once more. The attacker comes at them again, but Pam manages to start the car and drives the vehicle straight into a concrete wall, severing the killer in half.

As the carnage ends, police arrive on the scene, and a deputy has his leg cruelly severed by the killer before he dies. The aftermath leaves the survivors shaken and battered, but there is a glimmer of relief as the movie closes with Ed Jr. and Pam resting at the hospital, seemingly on the mend after a nightmarish ordeal.
