Late at night, in a dimly lit laundromat, Alberta Johnson keeps to herself as the attendant naps nearby. She posts an ad on the bulletin board seeking unused gardening tools, a small, hopeful sign of life continuing after hours. Soon after, DeeDee Johnson steps in, guarded and weary, explaining that she needs help doing the laundry and that she’s waiting for her husband to return to their apartment across the street. DeeDee tries to talk, but Alberta remains cautious, and the two share a tense, uneasy moment that slowly shifts into a wary companionship.
DeeDee attempts to wash a shirt in Alberta’s bag, a garment already stained by cabbage soup, but Alberta refuses, saying she wants to pre-soak it first. The quiet hum of machines and the echo of distant music set a strangely domestic stage for their exchange. Into this subdued scene strides a deejay named Shooter Stevens, who catches DeeDee’s attention as they speak with a mix of curiosity and reservation. He invites her to come play pool at the bar next door, and DeeDee weighs the invitation carefully, afraid that her husband might be cheating on her, and for a moment she considers leaving with him. Yet she stays in the laundromat, anchored by the fragile bond forming with Alberta.
Their conversation turns toward the frailties of marriage and the fear of being alone. Alberta reveals a deeper wound: her husband died a year earlier when he was taking out the trash, and a shirt stained with cabbage soup lingers in memory of that moment. The revelation softens the earlier tension, and the two women find a shared humor in the oddities of domestic life and loss.
As the laundry finishes, DeeDee sees that her husband has returned. Alberta slides her own husband’s shirt into the washer and dumps the rest of the box of detergent in with it, causing a frothy overflow that erupts into unexpected laughter between them. In the glow of the washing machines and the glow of their growing understanding, the night closes with a quiet, resilient sense of connection forged in an ordinary, imperfect moment.
