On the morning of his birthday, Rodolfo Cano — a hot-tempered slacker in Echo Park — lives with his free-spirited girlfriend, Diaz, and their volatile relationship sets off a chain of impulsive choices. In a fit of restlessness, Rodolfo decides to escape his simmering ennui by enlisting in the army, a decision that comes without much forethought and reverberates through the lives around him.

A clerical mix-up at the recruitment center sends the enlistment letter to another man with the same name, Rodolfo Cano II — a quiet, stoic loner who lives nearby on a boat. When Rodolfo II learns of the mistake, he is instructed to visit the recruitment office to set things straight. At the venue, Rodolfo I appears, leaves his home address for an army bus the next morning, and confronts Rodolfo II, who is initially unaware they share the same name. Rodolfo I bolts away, leaving the situation unresolved.

Driven by curiosity and a sense of coincidence, Rodolfo II trails the other Rodolfo to his house. Inside, he overhears Rodolfo I trying to rekindle a volatile night with Diaz after she has decorated their home for a birthday party. Diaz expresses frustration that she keeps putting in effort for him only to receive little in return. Rodolfo I storms out, and Diaz notices Rodolfo II lingering outside. She invites him in, where Rodolfo II surveys a house that hints at a different life, including an apparently unused master’s degree in journalism.

The moment is punctured when Diaz destroys the birthday cake, vents her anger by abusing the fridge, and, sensing Rodolfo II’s downbeat mood, decides to cheer him up with an old-timey dance. As the party guests begin to arrive, Diaz receives a call from a city bar where Rodolfo I is drunkenly provoking fights, drawing a line between desire, danger, and devotion.

Diaz heads out to fetch Rodolfo I, but changes course when she sees him leave the bar with another woman. She then notices Rodolfo II has followed and, after an initial scuffle, chases him as he escapes onto a bus. The journey leads them to the beach where Rodolfo II once lived, and Diaz encourages him to swim with her before they board his boat. He reveals a past as a sailor, and she wrestles with the truth that her boyfriend may be enlisting, though she struggles to accept the idea. An aggressive ex-girlfriend interrupts their moment, and they hide from her in the dark as she pleads for Rodolfo II to reunite with her.

Diaz confesses her dissatisfaction with life and proposes that she and Rodolfo II run away together. Rodolfo II does not answer, but he drives her home so she can pack a suitcase. Meanwhile, Rodolfo I, who has trashed the house with the bar companion, wakes and slips out the window. He encounters Rodolfo II in the street, and they walk together as Rodolfo I admits he has made many mistakes and believes Diaz is too good for him.

Back at the house, Diaz packs and, in a moment of catharsis, breaks some of Rodolfo I’s favorite records before returning to Rodolfo II’s car and falling asleep as she waits for him. When the two men return, Rodolfo I invites Rodolfo II inside to listen to a record that insinuates Rodolfo II’s interest in Diaz stems from loneliness and desire, not love. Rodolfo II falls asleep, and he quietly exits into the night as the army bus arrives. Without saying goodbye to the sleeping Diaz, Rodolfo Cano II steps onto the bus in his place and departs for training.

Diaz wakes to find the woman from the bar leaving the ruined house, and she returns to the space, placing the same record on again as she sits opposite Rodolfo I in quiet contemplation. The film closes on a note of ambiguity, tracing the tangled threads of longing, identity, and the choices that shape a life.
