Nora and Alec, a couple from Los Angeles, find themselves adrift on a quiet, winding road through the countryside. Their attempt to press on after a stop at a deserted rest area is tempered by a tense encounter with a rude woman whose car has broken down, and a uneasy stop at a dimly lit diner where a wary warning hints that Nora isn’t safe there. What starts as a simple search for gas and shelter quickly spirals into an unsettling sequence: a small cabin rented from an odd landlord becomes the stage for a night that begins with normality and ends in something far darker.

That night, a figure in a sheep mask crawls out from beneath their bed, jolting them into a strangled, sleep-deprived vigilance. The next morning, Nora wakes to find herself locked inside a wire cage in a barn, surrounded by people wearing animal masks who move about the farm in near-silent routine. It becomes clear: they have been abducted to a remote farm where humans are treated as livestock. The farmers keep the men and women apart; the men are killed and butchered, while the women are confined in pens, kept to reproduce and produce milk.

Alec is held with other imprisoned men, bearing witness as several are bludgeoned to death. Their bodies are hauled away to a slaughterhouse on the property, a grim reminder of the farm’s brutal arithmetic. Nora encounters other captives who have been there for years, and one tells her that the operators watched their victims long before abducting them, a chilling preface to the horror that follows. Escape, the captive explains, is nearly impossible.

Nora’s resolve is tested again after she witnesses another brutal killing, a moment that shatters her hope. Yet a spark of determination resurfaces when she discovers that Alec is alive, albeit injured. With a renewed sense of purpose, she and Alec manage to slip out of the barn, moving carefully through the sprawling grounds and shielding themselves from masked workers who roam the property in search of new prey.

In a heartbreaking turn, Alec is drawn into a trap and killed, leaving Nora to carry on alone. She frees another captive named Ashley and searches for a way off the property, a plan that centers on a lurking chance—an old bus that might serve as their escape route. Nora retrieves the keys and boards the vehicle, only to realize that the masked farm members are already inside, waiting for them.

The final scene tightens into a chilling tableau: the commune gathers around a table, and Nora and Ashley are positioned as the main course. The revelation lands with a bleak, unrelenting finality, leaving behind a sense of dread that lingers long after the credits roll. The film uses stark, rural isolation, stark lighting, and a relentless sense of inevitability to underscore its themes of dehumanization and commodification, crafting a unnerving horror experience that lingers in the memory.

  • The atmosphere is marked by quiet, claustrophobic spaces and a pervasive sense of surveillance, where every sound may signal danger.
  • The imagery of masks—both animal and human—serves to strip identity away from the captives, turning people into facsimile figures of livestock.
  • The pacing alternates between tense confinement and sudden, stark outbursts of violence, maintaining a constant thread of unease.
  • The film leaves viewers with a grim question about safety, complicity, and the resilience of those who refuse to surrender.
