What Is The Conscript About?

In 1833, as the new Belgian kingdom fears a Dutch invasion, conscripts are chosen by lottery. Poor farm boy Jan Braems sells his winning ticket to a rich family, joins the army, cannot understand his French‑speaking officers, rebels, gambles away his money, contracts a venereal disease, and drags his searching girlfriend into tragedy.
