What is Marvin's occupation at the beginning of the film?
Read the complete plot summary of The Animal, including all major events, twists, and the full ending explained in detail. Explore key characters, themes, hidden meanings, and everything you need to understand the story from beginning to end.
Marvin Alderman works as an evidence clerk at the Elkerton police precinct, where he dreams of following in the footsteps of his late father to become a police officer himself. Despite his dedication and physical training, Marvin struggles with persistent health issues that prevent him from passing the required physical exams, which leads to him being looked down upon by the community and teased by officers like Sergeant Sisk. Marvin’s feelings for environmentalist Rianna Holmes are evident, but during their first encounter, he stumbles and embarrasses himself.
One day, while alone at the station, Marvin responds to an emergency call when no other officers are available. Tragically, his attempt to help ends with him driving off a cliff and sustaining serious injuries. Miraculously, he is rescued by the eccentric scientist Dr. Wilder, who performs a groundbreaking operation. Using animal organs, Dr. Wilder replaces Marvin’s damaged body parts, aiming to save his life. In the days that follow, Marvin begins to experience extraordinary physical abilities and heightened instincts, as traditional medical issues no longer trouble him.
As Marvin tests his new capabilities, he uncovers his newfound strength and animalistic reflexes, which often surprise those around him. For example, while visiting his friend Miles at the airport, Marvin unexpectedly sniffs out and captures a man attempting to smuggle drugs in his rectum. The media catches wind of his impressive feat, earning Marvin a promotion to a full police officer under the supervision of [Sisk]. However, these changes come with side effects—Marvin starts to sleepwalk and acts on primal urges, which worry both him and Dr. Wilder. The scientist warns that while the procedure has improved Marvin physically, it may have unleashed hidden animal instincts.
Despite these challenges, Marvin’s life begins to stabilize as he works to control his instincts. His exceptional abilities help him excel in his duties and develop a close relationship with Rianna. But things take a darker turn when Marvin is linked to a brutal attack on a cow through a police sketch, leading to him being placed on leave. Overcome with fear and confusion about what he’s become, Marvin barricades himself inside his home. Rianna arrives to offer comfort, and they spend a vulnerable night together.
The next day, suspicion arises that Marvin was responsible for a hunter’s mauling, prompting authorities to raid his home. Marvin escapes into the woods, while Sergeant Sisk leads an armed mob intent on capturing him. His friends Miles and Fatty try to warn him, but Marvin soon encounters Wilder, who confesses that there was another patient who underwent a similar procedure, and he doubts Marvin is the true attacker.
During the pursuit, Sisk nearly falls to his death in a chasm but is saved by Marvin. Still, Sisk threatens Marvin with a gun, only to be interrupted by Rianna, who reveals she was the one responsible for the hunter attack. She explains her actions stemmed from her desire to protect a reared turkey vulture she released back into the wild. As tensions escalate, the angry mob arrives, ready to kill Marvin. To protect him, Miles falsely confesses to being the beast, risking his freedom due to the racial implications in prosecuting Miles, a Black American, and the mob ultimately releases Marvin.
A year later, Marvin and Rianna are happily married, with a family and a new animal sanctuary. Their life together seems peaceful until they watch television footage of Dr. Wilder receiving the Nobel Prize for the groundbreaking organ transplantation procedure that transformed Marvin’s life, symbolizing hope and scientific achievement. Throughout this journey, Marvin navigates the complex balance between his human identity and his animal instincts, ultimately finding acceptance and a new purpose.
