In a dystopian city set in the mid-21st century, we meet Qohen Leth, an enigmatic coding genius seeking refuge within the ash-strewn remnants of a former church. His life revolves around seeking “entities” for Mancom’s ontological research division, becoming increasingly fixated on this consuming task. Yet, amidst this chaos, Qohen clings to the hope of receiving a long-desired phone call, which he believes will reveal the answers to life’s profound questions.

An unexpected opportunity arises when his supervisor, Joby, invites him to a lavish party. Seizing this chance, Qohen pleads with Management for permission to work from home, stating that his unique mindset fosters greater productivity. Initially dismissed as “insanity,” his relentless determination is rewarded with a daunting assignment: the Zero Theorem, a complex mathematical quest notorious for its tendency to frustrate the minds of those who attempt it.

As Qohen delves deeper into the Zero Theorem, his mental health begins to unravel under the weight of Mancom’s demands and elusive entities. In a moment of rage, he shatters his workstation, a physical manifestation of his shattered dreams. Sensing his distress, Joby sends in Bainsley, a captivating woman Qohen met at the party, to assist him. Arriving donned in a sultry nurse’s outfit, she begins to reveal more about herself as she cleans, and in this encounter, Qohen shares his longing for the mysterious phone call that he believes will provide clarity.

Unexpectedly, Bob, the teenage son of Management, visits Qohen with ulterior motives, revealing Qohen’s fatigue with his duties and offering a devil’s bargain. If he agrees to continue working on the Zero Theorem, Bob promises to re-establish his connection with Bainsley. This enticing deal drives Qohen to accept, leading him to a virtual paradise via an advanced VR suit gifted by her, where they share a fleeting romantic moment.

However, as Bob returns, he discloses that the Zero Theorem serves to affirm the meaninglessness of life through the Big Crunch theory—an assertion Qohen vehemently rejects. Struggling to concentrate, he seeks comfort in the virtual realm, igniting a creative collaboration with Bainsley amid a cosmic adventure through a black hole, filled with both wonder and despair.

After a heartfelt declaration of love, Qohen’s connection to the virtual world is abruptly severed by Management, leading him to discover that Bainsley has taken on a new, unexpected profession as a webcam stripper, forcing him to distance himself further. In the weeks that follow, his escape from Mancom is challenged when Bob brings back the upgraded VR suit, intended for deep reflection. A chilling revelation presents itself as Dr. Shrink-Rom informs Qohen that his anticipated phone call is a mere figment of his imagination. Bainsley, sought after by both Qohen and Management, battles with her feelings for him yet ultimately remains torn by her initial motivations.

In a moment of reflection, Qohen shares that he once had a wife, hinting at his complex past. As Bob’s health declines, Qohen makes a drastic move to destroy the surveillance cameras installed by Management, symbolizing his resistance against their controlling nature. The situation deteriorates further when Bob is forcibly taken away, and Joby’s arrival suggests that Qohen’s actions have led to dire consequences.

Alone and desperate, Qohen puts on his VR suit one last time, but an unforeseen malfunction thrusts him into an electrifying journey through a digital landscape. There, he confronts the colossal Neural Net Mancrive, a supercomputer embodying all entities processed by Mancom, as Management materializes to unveil Qohen’s existential plight. The stark reality dawns upon Qohen that his entire life has been manipulated, revealing the chaotic ambition of Management.

In this surreal setting, Qohen grapples with the futility of existence, realizing that his quest for meaning was merely a misguided journey. Confronted by Management’s resignation of purpose, Qohen seizes the moment and dismantles the Neural Net, triggering a vibrant vortex of haunting memories, including a glimpse of Bainsley. With a newfound sense of freedom, he takes a leap into the overwhelming unknown, discovering an uncharted reality.

As the credits roll, Qohen is left standing solitary on a digital beach, adrift in the warmth of the sun, a powerful symbol of solace. He finds Bainsley’s bikini top, a gesture of rekindling a connection with a past that aches with nostalgia. A carefree game of catch with a virtual beach ball signifies his embrace of spontaneity and joy, culminating in tossing the virtual sun into the horizon. Throughout this serene visual tapestry, the sweet tones of Bainsley’s laughter echo, whispering his name, a poignant reminder that memories—much like waves—continue to ripple through the landscapes of existence.
