The Wrong Mother 2017

Wilhelm, an aspiring writer, departs from his northern hometown of Glückstadt, leaving behind his mother and his girlfriend as he heads toward Bonn to chase his dreams. A routine train change in Hamburg becomes the crossroads of a fleeting, unusual companionship when he notices a striking actress named Therese and manages to secure her phone number.

In Wilhelm’s compartment, an older man named Laertes communicates through a harmonica, while a teenage acrobat named Mignon—who appears to be mute—rounds out an unlikely quartet. With little money to spare, Wilhelm pays their fare and offers them a modest hotel for the night, where Therese eventually joins the small group. Bernhard, an awkward Austrian who longs to be a poet, soon befriends them all, spinning tales of a rich uncle and a castle perched on a Rhine peak. The plan to visit that castle grows into a misadventure when they arrive at the wrong place, yet the castle’s owner welcomes them with surprising generosity, saying they can stay as long as they wish after claiming that their unexpected arrival had spared him from a desperate act.

As the days unfold, tensions surface. Wilhelm struggles with not giving Therese the affection she desires, while Mignon signals her availability to him, complicating the emotional dynamics. The mood shifts drastically when Laertes confronts Wilhelm with his past role in the Holocaust and his lingering guilt, though he offers no repentance. The atmosphere at the castle darkens further when the owner, overwhelmed by these revelations, takes his own life, prompting the group to flee.

The next segment follows a divide: Bernhard ventures off on his own, while Therese ushers the others to her small flat in Frankfurt. The simmering tensions do not ease; instead, they intensify as estrangement and uncertainty take hold. At the end of this symbolic journey, Wilhelm goes his own way once again, reaching the Zugspitze—the southernmost, highest, and most desolate point in Germany—standing as a stark, solitary finish to his odyssey.
