The Wind of Change 1961

Frank David Hemmings is an unemployed, discontented and rebellious teenage Teddy Boy, living at home with his mild-mannered father, domineering mother and sister Josie. He drifts through local coffee bars with a gang of youths who share his racist views, convinced that black people are flooding Notting Hill and taking jobs.

After an evening wandering from one café to another, the gang seeks trouble and targets a black youth who is with a white girl. They pursue them through the dark streets, cornering the couple and unleashing a brutal assault with fists, feet, knives and bicycle chains. The attack leaves the boy with fatal injuries and the girl with stab wounds. Frank is horrified when he realises the injured girl is his sister.

As the police investigation begins, Frank’s family is left reeling by his involvement and the violent culture he has become part of, while Josie challenges his racist beliefs and questions the gang’s thrill-seeking mentality. The film follows the tightening net of inquiries and the strain it places on family loyalties, as the community wrestles with guilt, fear and the consequences of prejudice.

Set against the backdrop of working-class London, the narrative probes how anger, influence, and fear can drive young people toward violence, and how a single demoralizing act can fracture a family and redraw the lines of belonging.
