Jimmy Callahan runs The Best Man Inc., a company that provides polished best-man services for men who don’t quite have the friends they need for a wedding. When successful tax attorney Doug Harris and his fiancée Gretchen Palmer announce their plans, Doug realizes he’s missing the one thing a wedding needs: a capable rung of groomsmen who can play along and sell the whole ceremony. Enter the so‑called “Golden Tux”—a seven‑groomsmen dream team that will be handpicked and brought into line for a whopping $50,000, all expenses paid.

Jimmy brings in three of his friends—Fitzgibbons, Lurch, and Reggie—and they begin the audition for the remaining four spots. The tryouts feature four characters with some seriously unusual skills: Kip with a stutter, Endo who has three testicles, Bronstein who can dislocate and relocate his shoulder at will, and Otis who can string together sentences backwards. The plan is to craft a flawless, larger‑than‑life wedding party that Doug can present to Gretchen as a perfect fairytale.

Doug explains a quirky detail to Gretchen that becomes a running joke: “Bic” is a military priest based in El Salvador. She wants him to meet the family, and the tension rises as Jimmy glides through the social minefield at the family brunch. Things go spectacularly wrong when Jimmy accidentally sets Gretchen’s grandmother on fire, landing everyone in the emergency room. To cover for the mess, Jimmy tells Gretchen’s father Ed they used to play football together, which launches a challenge to a match with some of Jimmy’s old college teammates.

As the groomsmen are finalized, Doug learns that they’ve adopted fake identities based on the last names of famous Los Angeles sports figures, and Jimmy sets up fake photo shoots—mock skydiving, scuba diving, and other dramatic stunts—to sell the fantasy. When Doug doubts the scheme, they visit Edmundo, who bluntly says the key is to please Gretchen and her mother Lois and nothing else. To demonstrate his “best man” chops, Jimmy takes Doug to a wedding where the actual best man gives a terrible speech, and the two share drinks and show off dance moves that reveal the whole farce behind their plan. Doug opens up about his past—moving around a lot with his parents, losing friends, and then taking over the business after their deaths—and Jimmy’s blunt summary of the situation makes it clear they’re in a business arrangement, not true friendship. Doug accepts that reality, even as it stings.

Doug’s bachelor party brings Nadia into the picture, a woman who tries to seduce him but ends up becoming a friend. A prank involving peanut butter, a dog, and a blindfold goes haywire, sending them all to the hospital. The next day Nadia’s kiss goodbye hints she’d like to know Doug better, while the groomsmen test their limits by playing football with Ed and his college teammates in a muddy “bowl” that ends with Ed tearing a knee but securing a win for the wedding party’s side.

During the rehearsal dinner, Gretchen’s bridesmaids sing, and Doug’s crew presents a slideshow of fake photos that somehow helps win Gretchen over. She’s starting to notice the carefully curated clues—the last names on grooming products in the cabinet and other telltale signs—which makes her suspicious, though Doug brushes it off as paranoia.

On wedding day, a series of mishaps accelerates as the family priest cancels, so Doug suggests Jimmy officiate. At the reception, Gretchen vents about the fiasco—the torn zipper, her grandmother’s burns, her father’s knee injury, the subpar food—and declares she doesn’t love Doug; she married him for his kindness and wealth, a confession that unsettles him. Jimmy looks uneasy but presses forward with the plan.

In a climactic reveal, Jimmy gives his best‑man speech, and Doug interrupts him, confessing that they aren’t actually married—the priest wasn’t real, and the groomsmen weren’t authentic either. Gretchen is furious that the wedding is ruined, while Jimmy quietly lands a date with Gretchen’s sister, Allison. As the dust settles, Doug pays Jimmy the $50,000 fee and the two grudgingly acknowledge a fragile, complicated friendship.

The film closes with a sly turn of business as Jimmy proposes to cash in Doug’s first‑class honeymoon tickets to Tahiti. Instead, they head off on a guys’ trip, with Nadia joining the journey as Doug’s girlfriend.
