Dave Spritz, portrayed by Nicolas Cage, is a Chicago weatherman who grapples with unfulfilled ambitions and a deep-seated rage about his life’s direction. Despite being a successful figure, he struggles to recognize his own talent, constantly measuring himself against his accomplished father, Robert, played by Michael Caine, who achieved Pulitzer fame by age 33. As Dave drives Robert to various doctor appointments—appointments from which Robert keeps him deliberately excluded—he grows increasingly frustrated as the secrets surrounding his father’s serious health diagnosis unfold.

In his day-to-day life, Dave is not spared from challenges. He earns an impressive $240,000 annually for a mere two hours of work each day and faces public derision, including food being hurled at him by disgruntled “fans”. This ridicule arises from the misconception that his high-paying job is a mere walk in the park. Furthermore, his personal life is fraught with turmoil, including his strained relationship with his ex-wife, Noreen (portrayed by Hope Davis), a troubled daughter, Shelly, and a son, Mike, played by Nicholas Hoult, who is newly out of rehab.

The tension escalates when Dave faces the heartbreaking news of Robert’s lymphoma diagnosis, which gives him only a few months to live. In his attempts to reconnect with Shelly, he takes her to a public ice skating event, where he discovers troubling signs of her potential addiction. The fallout from this outing leads to an injury for Shelly, further complicating their already fragile relationship.

Simultaneously, Dave feels the pressure mounting from his marital issues with Noreen, who has moved on with Russ, igniting Dave’s anger. This culminates in an emotionally charged trust-building session where Noreen’s harsh criticisms lead to a painful conflict. Feeling hopeless, Dave takes up archery, a hobby he discovers when he attempts to share it with Shelly. Although he initially struggles with archery himself, he gradually finds solace and a modicum of confidence in the activity, ultimately attempting to teach his daughter.

Meanwhile, Mike’s situation worsens when he falls victim to inappropriate advances from his counselor, Don. As tensions rise, Dave earns an opportunity to secure a lucrative weatherman position with a national talk show, “Hello America”, which could radically change his life—if only he could maintain focus on the family he’s in danger of losing.

With each passing ordeal, Dave’s attempts to reconcile with his family spiral out of control. His return to Chicago leads to a dramatic confrontation with Russ and a living funeral for Robert, where Dave’s emotional turmoil manifests in unexpected ways. As he grapples with grief and regret, a final conversation with Robert reveals the reality that change is still within reach.

In the aftermath, several months later, Dave has accepted the position and relocated to New York. Although the chaos of his past still lingers, the newfound tranquility in his life is perhaps subtly influenced by the discipline he learned through archery, a hobby which has provided him both an outlet and a new perspective on his life choices.
