The Three Musketeers 1933

In the harsh deserts of North Africa, the French Foreign Legion holds a tenuous presence on the edge of the desert. Lt. Tom Wayne, John Wayne, is framed for the murder of Armand Corday, Lon Chaney Jr. the brother of his fiancée, and he swears to uncover the real killer and bring the truth to light. His pursuit threads through blistering sands and sun-scorched outposts as he follows a dangerous lead toward a figure shrouded in fear and secrecy.

His search pulls him into the company of three bumptious legionnaires: Clancy, Jack Mulhall the Irishman who relishes a fight; Renard, Raymond Hatton the wily Frenchman; and Schmidt, Francis X. Bushman Jr. the German who cannot resist his sausages. They are the surviving members of a Foreign Legion unit wiped out in a brutal attack, and they quickly become reluctant allies in a quest that promises danger at every turn.

The case points toward a shadowy villain known as El Shaitan—the Devil of the Desert—a mysterious Arab terrorist who hides his face and true identity, leaving many to suspect different leaders in the unfolding serial. El Shaitan, Charles Middleton (voice), governs a fanatical desert cult from a secret sanctuary, a covert society formed to resist French authority and sow fear across the dunes.

At a remote meeting place called The Devil’s Circle, the cult’s influence casts a long shadow over the region, drawing in politicians, locals, and rival soldiers who all have something to gain from the chaos. As the trio of legionnaires is cornered by a horde of Berber tribesmen, Wayne intervenes in a dramatic counterstrike, using the machine gun mounted on his aircraft to halt the onslaught and turn the tide in a matter of moments.

Wayne’s courage puts him in constant danger, but he repeatedly comes to the aid of Clancy, Renard, and Schmidt, proving himself a modern-day d’Artagnan who rides against overwhelming odds with resolve and resourcefulness.
