Four interconnected stories explore memory, desire, and the quiet fragility of everyday life, weaving a delicate circle that returns to where it began.
In the opening tale, madness and mischief drive a devoted son Jaycee Chan to distraction as his mother Zhou Yun — a fearless, restless presence — pursues rare moments of calm. She climbs tall trees and even stands astride a small earthen raft on the river, cherishing a beautiful pair of slippers she keeps losing, while her son fears that the footwear will someday vanish and his mother might disappear.
On a college campus, two old friends test the strength of their bond through rivalry over a woman. Doctor Lin Joan Chen is the mistress of Old Tang [Jiang Wen], but she finds herself drawn to a teacher named Liang [Anthony Wong]. When Liang is accused of groping women at a campus gathering, Lin offers a provocative test behind a curtain to determine whose hand was guilty.
In the third story, Old Tang, a hunter, has a young wife Kong Wei who begins a relationship with the madwoman’s son. One day, Tang overhears their noises of passion and his wife whispers that her husband says her belly is velvet. He is determined to shoot the young man, but is taken aback when the boy asks him,
What is velvet?
The final episode assembles all the characters in a dreamlike sequence that folds their lives back onto themselves, giving the impression that their paths are bound in a circle and fate has a way of returning to where it started.
