The city of Bombay becomes the stage for a chilling serial killer known by the media as the “Stoneman,” who claims his fifth victim while the police force pays little attention to the threat. Suspended sub-inspector Sanjay Shelar seizes the moment to press his career back into service, seeing a chance for reinstatement through a high-stakes pursuit. With the covert support of his patronizing superior, AIG Satam, Sanjay launches a solitary, legally tenuous investigation, sketching out a path that relies on grit, street smarts, and a few trusted allies.

To aid his mission, Sanjay turns to a loyal aide, a constable named Kamble, whose personal life has its own mysteries—the recent disappearance of his wife haunts him as the case deepens. The official investigator on the case, Inspector Kedar Phadke, clashes with Sanjay at every turn, each man digging into the city’s shadows from his own angle. The two soon diverge, patrolling separate routes through a city that never truly sleeps, each hoping to corner the elusive killer.

An informant named Ghanshu brings a crucial lead: Mohammed, a cab driver who operates only at midnight, becomes the prime suspect in the Stoneman’s arc of terror. The streets themselves seem to whisper that Mohammed could be the man behind the mask. Ghanshu’s trust is not long-lived, however, as he is murdered on the very sidewalks he once walked to stay alive. The Stoneman’s murders are intimate and stark—targets are people sleeping rough on the city’s pavements, from beggars to laborers to street cleaners, a disturbing pattern that shocks the police and civilians alike.

One restless night, the killer targets another beggar, only to be thwarted by Kedar and his patrol in a tense confrontation. The moment of danger exposes an uncomfortable truth: Sanjay’s private investigative room has been visited by the Stoneman, leaving vermilion smears as a disturbing calling card. He also discovers that Mohammed has suddenly vanished from the city, a clue that complicates the case and raises stakes.

Worried about his wife Manali’s safety, Sanjay urges her to return to her village for now. The urban labyrinth consumes them anew when Sanjay encounters the Stoneman at a railway station, just as the killer moves in for another strike. Before Sanjay can close in, Kedar and his team arrive and shoot Sanjay in the thigh, a wound that forces him into hiding. Yet this setback only deepens the bond with his wife, who tends to his injuries and keeps his resolve intact as the hunt resumes.

Driven by new suspicions and hard-won data, Sanjay embarks on a meticulous reexamination of the case. He uncovers a shocking possibility: the killer may be a policeman who uses tantric rituals to cure impotence, a dark doctrine that requires human sacrifices. He entrusts Kamble with the responsibility of informing Satam, handing over his research documents as evidence, and urges the higher-ups to act.

The climax reframes the entire investigation. Mohammed is revealed not as the Stoneman but as a decoy arranged by Kedar to roam the streets under orders, while Kamble—whose name appears in the investigation as a quiet, dangerous adversary—is unmasked as the true Stoneman. Kamble lunges at Sanjay with a rock, poised to deliver a final, fatal murder, but the hospital is prepared, and Sanjay is saved by a timely intervention from the police, including Kedar and his team. A trap laid by the authorities culminates in Kamble’s capture; Satam orders him shot, and the case is officially closed, with Sanjay deemed unfit to return to the force.

In the aftermath, a tantric figure in Kamble’s village conducts a ritual that calls for nine human sacrifices and hints at murders spreading beyond Bombay to Calcutta. The narrative closes by returning to the double-ghost of violence that haunts both cities in 1983 and 1987, leaving a chilling suggestion that the Stoneman’s poison still lingers, even as the immediate danger appears contained.
